My dog barks at an empty staircase. What's the rational reason?

As a general rule, dogs will be able to smell and hear much better than we can at all times, and at night, they can see much better because of the way their eyes are made. Consequently, it is likely either a person (could be pretty far off) or, more likely, a wild animal is entering Rusty's field of senses in one way or another. The challenging part, once you know what he is barking at, will be to redirect his attention because, to him, he is protecting his pack/territory. This carries a strong instinct-driven behavior that requires a lot of time and diligence to correct if you want him to stop. I would encourage you to make sure of what he is focusing on if you can, then try to desensitize him to whatever that is. Hope this helps!

I suspect that he does have a reason, even if you can't tell what it is :) Dogs have much better hearing than we do, so he may hear something outside that is upsetting him that you aren't able to hear. I would suggest using a white noise machine or something similar to help block any sounds from outside that may be upsetting him.

I think it's possible that the dog can sense something about the person that is making him feel uneasy, but I don't think the dog knows that the person doesn't like him in the house. Dogs also don't do things like bark or misbehave out of spite. They are very focused on our behavior and nonverbal cues and most of the time they are simply responding to the way we are acting whether we realize it or not.

At his age, it could be a degree of canine cognitive dysfunction (senility). You would need to have Chewy examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. It sounds like Sofi may be barking because she hears something outside - this is a common reason that many dogs bark. You can help by turning on a TV, white noise machine, or something else to help block outdoor sounds. Another good strategy is to call her to you for a treat every time she starts to bark - if you're consistent about this, she will learn to automatically run to you for her treat when she hears a noise, instead of barking.

If Louie is otherwise acting normally (normal appearance regarding appetite, thirst, peeing, stools, walking, playing, and sleeping), it sounds like either a noise or a smell has his attention and may be activating his instinctive response to be alerted and cautious. Mice or other pests are common culprits as dogs can often smell or hear them through openings such as electrical outlets or light fixtures in walls. Strange behavior can also indicate early onset neurologic disease, so if nothing can be found that he may be looking for, please have him examined by your veterinarian, especially if he starts having any other abnormal behavior, trouble walking, trouble hearing, or other signs of neurologic disease.
