Why does my dog suddenly bark at the gate, seemingly for no reason?

I suspect that he does have a reason, even if you can't tell what it is :) Dogs have much better hearing than we do, so he may hear something outside that is upsetting him that you aren't able to hear. I would suggest using a white noise machine or something similar to help block any sounds from outside that may be upsetting him.

What you're describing sounds like a reaction to the general excitement level and maybe the volume in the room. Some dogs will actually become aggressive that type of situation (for example, they will bite ONLY when there's a touchdown -- not so fun for the visitors). As far as stopping it, keeping her a quiet separate area during big gatherings is one way, as long as she doesn't bark to be reunited with the group. You can also try feeding her a continuous steam of small treats to help change her emotional reaction to these events. One thing to avoid is any yelling or punishment, since that may push her over the edge from barking to aggression

Poor Draco! He probably is barking more now because it worked to scare away the burglar and so he feels the need to protect you and the house. Barking can be hard to stop because often times the "reward" of someone going away easily reinforces the barking outside of your control, especially if it's a delivery or postman stopping by. You can work on it a few ways, by either having him greet people at the door by sitting nicely and accepting a treat (basically refocusing his behavior on sitting and waiting instead of barking), or by distracting him with something such as a Kong or chew toy when people come by to divert his attention. Working on commands such as quiet or even speak can help him associate barking with those as well instead of what's at the door. If the barking continues, talking with a local trainer is also a good idea as they will better be able to observe the behavior in person and provide a more tailored response.

This dog is probably threatening to Bella for some reason. It may be intact (and if in heat possibly a female). Since she doesn't do this to other dogs/people walking by, it has to be something specific to that dog. I would trust Bella's instinct about the dog and avoid any interaction with it if at all possible. Sometimes growling can be more of a warning and then Bella would likely start barking if the dog approached or got any closer. When you notice this behavior, try to distract Bella away from it by offering her a toy to play with or a treat. This way she does not become too hung up on the possible 'threat'. Continue to monitor Bella's behavior. If she starts doing it to other dogs or people she may be developing aggressive tendencies. I hope this helps. That would be very annoying for you! It could be that he is bored, something has frightened him, he could be lonely, or he could be hearing something you cannot (dogs have better hearing than humans). If he doesn't sleep in your room with you, you can try bringing him in with you, and he could sleep next to the bed. If that's not an option, you can give him a toy to play with, or one that is a puzzle toy he has to solve in order to get a treat. You can try doing a big walk with him before bed to tire him out, which will help him sleep through the night.
