My dog has bald spots on his mouth. What could be the cause?

It could be local infection or allergic reaction. Have Mylo examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat infection. If Mylo eats or drinks from a plastic bowl, switch to ceramic or stainless steel to see if that makes a difference. Some dogs can be allergic to plastic bowls.

That appears to be a bacterial infection of the hair follicle around the mouth. Moisture around the mouth from eating and drinking can contribute. You could try a topical antibacterial wipe ( like an acne pad) after meals for the next few days. If that doesn't help you may need to see a veterinarian for oral antibiotics or other medications.

Reoccurring skin infections could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Secondary infections from yeast or bacteria are common. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Sonny wear an elizabethan collar at all times. This is especially likely if Russell had started using a plastic food or water bowl in the last month. If so, switch back to ceramic or steel. There are also auto-immune diseases and allergies that can affect this area. The best way to prevent this is by keeping the water and food bowls very clean. If he has been itchy, you may get an e-collar from your local pet store to prevent further scratching trauma to the area. Keep this as clean as possible. You can use soapy water. This usually resolves on its own. Good luck!

Keep the area clean with soap and water or use clearsil wipes in the area. You can apply cortisone cream to help and if this does. It show improvement then I would have a vet check the area

You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash her whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have her examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications.
