My dog is vomiting dark brown, granular liquid repeatedly. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 65 lbs

My 8 year old Blue Heeler has vomited 6 times today. The first two times, the vomit was dark brown and thick. The last 4 times, it has been clear, runny with dark brown granules in it. What do I need to do for him?

Poor Bear! This could indicate bleeding within his G.I. tract. That could be caused by also's, toxins, some cancers as well as infections. Because bleeding in the G.I. tract can cause severe anemia and even death I recommend Bear be examined by his veterinarian or emergency veterinarian tonight. Do not offer him any food or water or any human medications until he is examined by his veterinarian. You should monitor his gums for paleness as well as his abdomen for any pain or distention.

Teddy needs to be seen by your veterinarian today. An exam should be followed by abdominal x-rays to diagnose obstruction and bloodwork to diagnose systemic infection or other conditions. Hospitalization and supportive care are likely indicated until a diagnosis is reached. This may include IV fluids, anti emetics and antibiotics (if indicated).

Hello. I am sorry that Teddy is sick. You can try a bland diet to see if this helps Teddy. Boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals is recommended. However, if the vomiting continues, and Teddy doesn't want to eat, he could have other serious medical conditions that require veterinary care. Foreign bodies (eating a sock or toy) can be stuck in his guts and without surgery can be fatal. He could also have a serious gastritis, that may require medications to treat. I would recommend going to the vet if you can, or if he continues to vomit or not eat. Good luck with Teddy.

They may recommend bloodwork and xrays to determine what is causing his symptoms. Possible causes include an intestinal instruction, infection, toxin or metabolic problem such as kidney or liver disease

My dog is throwing up brown, shaking, and in pain. What's wrong?

The sleeping and standing in abnormal ways is indicative of significant abdominal pain. Brown vomit is concerning for a GI obstruction or serious pancreatitis. I would recommend that Chato get checked out by a vet ASAP. After examination, the vet may recommend blood work and/or x-rays to determine what is the cause so they can discuss an appropriate treatment protocol.

My puppy's vomit smells bad and looks discolored. Is this serious?

That does not appear to be a normal color for vomit. Vomit is usually yellow-ish, the color of the food or brownish. That makes me worried that Bear got into something causing that abnormal discoloration. The smell could be related to whatever it was he ate or indicate that the gut is not moving. I recommend to get Bearr examined today and try to take in a sample of the vomit if possible. Especially with young puppies, it’s always better to be safe. Why is my dog throwing up coffee-colored vomit, even after water?

I'm so sorry to hear that Boomer is sick! It is very concerning that Boomer is throwing up everything including water. The vomit being coffee colored makes me concerned about a GI ulcer or serious GI bleed. This can occur secondary to toxin ingestion, kidney failure, or overdoses of some medications. I strongly suggest you take Boomer to an emergency veterinarian so he can be examined and supportive care can be started. He will likely need blood work to determine what the underlying cause. Unfortunately without emergency care Boomer is at risk of becoming dehydrated and the illness worsening. You can try a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice however I don't think this will resolve the issue so I'd still encourage you to seek veterinary care for Boomer as soon as possible. My dog ate ribs, vomited, and has bloody stool. Should I see a vet?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bear. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. If your veterinarian does not have appointments, then he will need to go to an emergency hospital. I worry that the rib bones will cause a blockage in his stomach or intestines. This requires a emergency surgery if this happens. He also could develop a condition known as pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. The veterinarian will examine him and likely recommend testing such as x-rays of his belly and blood work. Based on these results, a treatment plan can be formulated to help him better. I hope this information helps!
