My dog ate a worm and vomited blood. Is his throat injured?

Poor pup! No, this isn't normal at all - I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet today if at all possible. Vomiting blood with pale gums indicates a serious, life-threatening problem. I would be concerned that he may have parvo or some other serious problem such as an intestinal obstruction, as the dewormer would not cause these symptoms. The emergency vet can do a parvo test or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong and get him started on appropriate treatment right away.

It sounds as Walter is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Blood in the vomit is definitely cause for concern, as it can indicate stomach ulcers, stomach parasites, or even a foreign body. As puppies are prone to getting into things they shouldn't, Simba may have ingested a toxin such as human pain medication or a piece of a toy. It is concerning that Simba did not feel well after vomiting. I recommend having him seen by a vet as vomiting blood can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Your vet can perform bloodwork and x-rays to rule out the conditions above.

If it was a one time instance, then yes, it should be OK to just watch him right now. I do think he should see a vet for sure if it happens again - bloody vomit is not a good sign. If you have some on hand, you can give him oral Omeprazole 10mg once per day. It would be a good idea. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello. A small amount of blood in vomitus may simply indicate that a small blood vessel, like a capillary, ruptured during the vomiting act. If it occurs again, it might be a good idea to find out if there are any issues or lesions either in the esophagus or upper part of the stomach. You indicate that Sonny is less than 2 years of age, so I would nor expect anything too serious, such as cancer, but the presence of an inflammatory or erosive lesion is a possibility. Your veterinarian may be able to examine the upper part of Sonny's esophagus under light sedation, or he may need to be thoroughly scoped to examine the lower part of the esophagus & stomach. Poor Colbie! It is possible that the blood in her most recent vomitus was a result of esophageal irritation or tiny tears developing in the esophagus from so much gastric acid exposure. If she is otherwise acting normally and eating without issue, I don't think this warrants a trip to the ER. However, call her vet in the morning and they may want to recheck her sooner or adjust her medication doses. I hope she's feeling better soon!
