My dog just ate a whole steak! What health issues should I watch for?

Raw meat can contain bacteria like E.coli so it can cause GI upset and illness. Also if it contained a bone at all (most sirloin a don't) then there is a risk for an intestinal obstruction. If Rambo has any vomiting, diarrhea, pain, weakness or belly swelling he needs to be seen by a veterinarian. These signs could occur as soon as 6-12 hours after eating the meat up to 4-5 days later. So if he's normal in a week he will likely be ok. Continue to feed him normally unless he starts having any of those changes outlined above.

Poor Bruce! The vomiting could be due to the steak but causes are possible. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. You may also with hold food for 6-12 hours and offer small amounts of water frequently. If Bruce remains ill after 24 hours, if he is not drinking or if he is getting worse, he needs to be examined by the veterinarian. I hope he starts feeling better quickly! As long as he is behaving normally, you can monitor at home. Watch for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

It could cause him some issues but there is no way to predict that. I suggest you just monitor him closely for any abnormal signs like vomiting, not wanting to eat, extreme lethargy, abdominal pain, etc. If you notice any of those then get him to your vet right away. Hi there! There are a couple of risks associated with eating a pound of raw beef. Aside from general GI distress, dogs, like humans, can contract foodborne illnesses, such as E.coli. Pancreatitis is also a consideration, as that much meat could potentially be a lot for the gut to handle, especially if it's not lean. I would keep a close eye on Brooke for signs of stomach upset, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. I also strongly recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning for further advice. If any symptoms develop, you should bring her to the vet right away for treatment. I do not recommend giving her anything over the counter at home without a vet's advice. I would watch Joshie for anything abnormal, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, panting, etc. It may be no big deal, but if she does develop symptoms she should see a vet for treatment.

Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Consider withholding food for the next 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. If Dexter develops stomach upset without any other symptoms, you can fast him then offer a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating or develops abdominal pain then he should be examined by your veterinarian.
