My dog ate white gum-like stuff and is sick. Is it an emergency?

Many types of Trident gum contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs because it very quickly causes hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and liver damage. At this point, you should take Gidget to an emergency veterinarian immediately. They may or may not induce vomiting since it's been over an hour since she ingested the gum. They will also be able to closely monitor her blood glucose and liver values, while administering supportive IV fluids and medications. There are no home remedies for this situation - this is a life-threatening emergency if the gum contained xylitol. I really hope that everything goes well for Gidget!

Poor Maui!! I would recommend that you find out exactly what type of gum it was, and then call your vet clinic or the pet poison hotline. Gum often contains 'fake' sugars which can be harmful to dogs and the symptoms can range from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) to significant liver damage. Your vet or the pet poison hotline can help you determine if any treatment is needed. Sometimes these ingestions require hospitalization, IV fluids and medications, and bloodwork both during the hospital stay and afterwards to ensure the liver is continuing to function properly. And remember, just because your dog seems to be acting find doesn't mean they aren't getting sick on the inside. Yes this could be life threatening if the Extra was sugar free and contains xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and is fatal without treatment. Because I'm not sure if the Extra Oliver ate contain xylitol, and if you aren't sure either, the best thing to do is rush him into the vet immediately. The artificial sugars in some gum can certainly be toxic--we need to know how much gum, and which brand. If you have any major concern and he ate the gum within the last couple of hours, take him to an emergency vet for them to induce vomiting and then you likely won't have to worry about potential toxicity. Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gretchen!! I highly recommend you take Gretchen to your Vet ASAP or an emergency hospital now. Some candy contains xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. It causes low blood sugar and liver failure. Another possibility is a stomach or intestinal obstruction (the wrappers are stuck and need to be surgically removed) or pancreatitis secondary to the candy. Check thee package of the chewing gum and look if the sweetener in it is xylitol. If so, then your dog will have xylitol intoxication which causes the body to be undersugared, If you cannot find a veterinarian to put Patches on a glucose drip, try to get some glucose or honey and feed him several teaspoons every few hours until you can get him to a vet for a glucose test and an exam.
