My dog ate candy, now lethargic & won't eat. Is it an emergency?

Yes, taking him to the emergency vet is your best option. If he was a bigger dog that amount of chocolate may not have been harmful but since he is so small it might be causing him an issue. The gummies are not likely toxic if there is no xylitol but it is a lot of sugar.

There is likely not enough chocolate in the cookies to cause chocolate toxicity (also since she is a large dog). However, even if it was too much chocolate, it is already past the point of being able to decontaminate her (remove the toxins). I suspect she isn't felling well because of stomach upset (diarrhea) from eating the cookies. I would recommend feeding her a bland diet for 2-3 days (boiled chicken and boiled rice) then transition her back to her normal diet. If the lollipop had some sort of gum or filling, it can cause an obstruction in her intestines. If she also ate the stick, that may cause problems such as a perforation, especially if the stick was plastic. The sugar content may make Hazel slightly hyper or shaky as well. I recommend bringing her to the vet if you are worried, as any of the conditions above are easier to treat the earlier they are diagnosed. It sounds like getting into the trash the other day and eating food from the garage she should not have eaten may be causing stomach upset and disinterest in eating her normal food. If she is lethargic and not herself, then I would take her into a veterinary hospital as soon as possible. She may have ingested something toxic in the garage like chocolate, onions, grapes, garlic or other toxin that could have made her sick. Another possibility may be eating items with lots of sugar and fat in them which can cause pancreatitis which can be very painful and could explain the lack of appetite. Another possibility is eating items like nectarine pits or other chunky solid food items may have caused an obstruction in her intestines. She is likely stretching frequently perhaps because she is in some discomfort in abdominal area and she may be trying to get some relief. My best advice to you is to take her in as soon as possible. Many types of Trident gum contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs because it very quickly causes hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and liver damage. At this point, you should take Gidget to an emergency veterinarian immediately. They may or may not induce vomiting since it's been over an hour since she ingested the gum. They will also be able to closely monitor her blood glucose and liver values, while administering supportive IV fluids and medications. There are no home remedies for this situation - this is a life-threatening emergency if the gum contained xylitol. I really hope that everything goes well for Gidget!

Hello, sorry to hear about Toe Toe. Unfortunately chocolate toxicity tends to cause GI signs that are normally transient. However in high quantities they may also cause pancreatitis which may cause more severe, long term signs. If her signs are not resolved 4 days after her ingestion, then she will most likely need medications to treat her signs fully. Most concerning however is gum ingestion and the presence of xylitol in that gum. This may cause a severe decrease in her blood sugar and occasionally liver disease which may also present itself with GI signs and lethargy. Unfortunately, Toe Toe is going to need to be see by a veterinarian. There are multiple options out there to help you bring her to the veterinarian. Some may include funding from rescue groups, applying for care credit, and contacting friends and family. I hope you are able to bring Toe Toe to a veterinarian. In the interim, make sure she has plenty of water available and offer a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken and low fat cottage cheese.
