My dog ate sugar-free gum. No vet open. What can I do at home?

If you don't have an emergency vet near you, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. You can also call the closest ER vet and explain the situation. Unfortunately, it's illegal for me to advise you to do anything like inducing vomiting because I can't see Cujo in person.

I would be suspicious of gum causing this. Gum can contain an artificial sweetener known as xylitol that can artificially lower the blood sugar in dogs and cause liver damage. In these cases, it's recommended to give the dog an IV glucose solution and monitoring for 24 hours. Unfortunately, this requires a visit to the vet. Without knowing more, I am just guessing that this is gum. It seems like some sort of poisoning is possible though, so I think either way the best thing to do is take Goose to a vet as soon as possible, or he could have life-threatening complications. Many types of Trident gum contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs because it very quickly causes hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and liver damage. At this point, you should take Gidget to an emergency veterinarian immediately. They may or may not induce vomiting since it's been over an hour since she ingested the gum. They will also be able to closely monitor her blood glucose and liver values, while administering supportive IV fluids and medications. There are no home remedies for this situation - this is a life-threatening emergency if the gum contained xylitol. I really hope that everything goes well for Gidget!

Yes this could be life threatening if the Extra was sugar free and contains xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and is fatal without treatment. Because I'm not sure if the Extra Oliver ate contain xylitol, and if you aren't sure either, the best thing to do is rush him into the vet immediately. Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gretchen!! I highly recommend you take Gretchen to your Vet ASAP or an emergency hospital now. Some candy contains xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. It causes low blood sugar and liver failure. Another possibility is a stomach or intestinal obstruction (the wrappers are stuck and need to be surgically removed) or pancreatitis secondary to the candy. After the Vet does an exam they will want to run full blood work and possibly belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Gretchen the best!

I have looked up the ingredients of this cough drop, and luckily it doesn't contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. The rest of the ingredients like menthol, eucalyptus oil, colors and flavors cause GI upset. I'd keep a close eye on her for now.
