My dog ate wax paper, has orange mushy poop. When to see vet?

If she is eating and not vomiting and is passing stool (despite the straining and it being loose) then I wouldn't be too concerned. Hopefully she is just dealing with diarrhea. The diarrhea can be from stress of moving, ate something gross that is upsetting her tummy, a virus or bacterial infection, parasites, the paper towels could be causing a blockage, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy/ sensitivity. Since she is waking up overnight I would fast her for 12-24 hours to rest the intestinal tract then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 days of normal stools. If the stool hasn't improved in 2-3 days, she stops eating, starts vomiting or becomes lethargic I would have her examined by a Vet. Monitor her for the next 24 hours. Watch for lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, straining to defecate or abdominal pain. If she goes beyond this with no symptoms, then she may be in the clear. If she develops any of the above symptoms, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. Pancreatitis or intestinal obstruction are real concerns after such a "meal".

The symptoms of gastrointestinal blockage include vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, small stools or no stools at all. If Sassy ate the incontinence pad a few days ago and she has not developed signs of anorexia and vomiting, most likely she does not have a blockage. If the only worrying sign at the moment is abnormal stool appearance, you should try bland diet for 2-3 days. However, if Sassy looks unwell or starts to vomit, you should take her to your local vets right away.

Toilet paper should pass, but may cause some digestive upset or cause blockage of the bowels if enough was eaten. That said, blood from the stomach is usually dark red or black, and blood from the rectum/anus is a brighter red color. If Brie has eaten any new treats or foods, that can also affect stool color. If the red stool and vomit only occurred once after eating the toilet paper, I would continue to monitor Brie for any other signs of a blockage, These include continued vomiting and diarrhea, blood in either still, hunched or tender abdomen, bloated abdomen, not wanting to eat or drink, or attempting to vomit or defecate without success, as these are all signs of a medical emergency. You may also want to offer a bland diet for a few days to help with any minor digestive upset. Boiled chicken and rice is an easy option on the stomach. If you suspect a blockage, the symptoms continue, or Brie isn't improving, vet care ASAP is best.

The diarrhea and blood can be from the raw hide so I would avoid them in the future. If she is eating, bright and not vomiting you can wait until Monday. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, other dietary indiscretions, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/table food/food. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish Luna the best!

It's good that her stool is better this morning, and I would continue to monitor it. Orange and blueberries can be hard for a dog to digest, and that's probably why you are still seeing it in her stool. Given you are seeing improvement in the stool, continue to monitor it for the next 24-48 hours. If it isn't normal after that time period, then I would have her seen by a vet.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If Aubie is eating, drinking and energy level is good, then most likely the wrapper is not causing any problems. I would add canned pumpkin to her food (1/2 can in morning and at night) to see if that helps her defecate. If she is still not producing feces, is in pain when attempting to defecate or begins vomiting or show other symptoms, I would have your vet take a look at her.
