My dog ate a cupcake wrapper. Is she constipated or should I worry?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Molly! Half of a paper cupcake holder isn't very big, and the paper itself should break down in her stomach. Given the small amount she ate, I would suspect this would pass without problem, but because she has some mild megacolon I would keep a close eye on her. If she starts having trouble passing feces or develops other signs such as vomiting, anorexia, or lethargy, then I would take her into the vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

If the cupcakes did not have chocolate or raisins and the piece of plastic wrap was relatively small it should be safe to monitor her for a few days. If she begins vomiting, if she develops diarrhea or if her appetite is decreased then I’d recommend seeing your vet.

No need to worry! Licking the wrapper won't be enough chocolate to cause Hazel any problems. Even eating a bit of the wrapper is not a worry. This should dissolve in her stomach acid and pass without issue. You don't need to do anything. I hope this helps!

You aren't bothering me at all! That's what we are all here for :-) Other than the potential this wrapper could cause an obstruction in Stella, there's not much to worry about if there wasn't a lot of cream cheese wrapper on it. A lot of cream cheese could cause pancreatitis, but if there was only a little on the wrapper, it's quite unlikely to cause it. Half a wrapper isn't a huge foreign body, so it this will likely pass without problem. You can monitor Stella for signs of obstruction, which include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy, and constipation. If you see any of those signs, I would take her into the vet immediately. It can take up to 72 hours for the wrapper to pass. Hopefully, however, Stella will be just fine.

No they should pass ok. I would feed them so the wrappers get through the intestinal tract with the food. If they start vomiting or won't eat or do not pass stool the I would take them right in for an exam and X-rays. As long as they are acting normally it's fine to watch them and wait. Hello. I am sorry that Luna is having some abnormal poops. If she ate the paper on Wednesday and has been eating and pooping since then, she is unlikely to be blocked. She could however have a gastritis from eating the muffin, or something else. I would suggest keeping a close eye on her eating and pooping, and feed a bland diet of boneless/skinless/boiled chicken breasts and boiled rice in small frequent meals. If she stays happy and is eating and pooping, the diarrhea should clear up on it's own. If she becomes tired, vomits, or stops eating, then I would take her to the vet right away. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would monitor Ripley for now as there are no clinical symptoms to be concerned about. What I would recommend doing would be to feed bread slices with pure canned pumpkin to help booked up the feces around the object to help prevent it from causing any punctures in the intestinal tract potentially. If you begin to see any symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, inappetence or anything else out of the ordinary I would get Ripley seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later and have abdominal x-rays taken to see if the stick has caused any issues.
