My dog ate Vicoprofen. What are the potential effects and what to do?

I would check the rest of the packet to see if he has eaten any others - simply having one in his mouth but not ingesting/swallowing it would not cause any significant effects (other than oral irritation if he chewed into the bitter center) but if such a small dog did consume whole tablets there would be a potential for toxic effects and rapid decontamination would be recommended

Hello. You do not say what strength the ibuprofen was, but a 50 pound dog can take about 225 mg every 12-24 hours. Toxicity may be seen if your dog ingested around 568 mg. If the tablet was 400 mg or less, Zeke will be fine, but if this was a 600mg tablet or more, you should contact your veterinarian. Fortunately this dose is low enough that it should not cause a concern, as long as you are certain more than one capsule was not ingested. Hunter may have ingested 8 mg/kg of ibuprofen based on the weight you provided. Ibuprofen can cause stomach and intestinal ulcers at doses higher than 25 mg/kg and kidney damage at 120 mg/kg. I would still recommend monitoring him for signs of nausea or diarrhea, but veterinary intervention is not required. The low end of the toxic dose range is 50mg/kg, which is about 1500mg. He should be fine but if you begin to notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Oh no, that's not good! Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs, and the best thing for you to do is take Paxx into the vet immediately. The vet can start decontamination procedures to prevent ibuprofen toxicity from occurring. Please take Paxx into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

Any treatment now will be purely supportive. Monitor for vomiting, jaundice, lethargy, increased respiration and anemia. Liver and kidney function should be checked via blood test to rule out damage from the dose of acetaminophen ingested. Further supportive care may be indicated if liver/kidney function is compromised. This may include IV fluids and blood transfusions if indicated.
