My dog ate toilet paper and is trying to poop but nothing comes out.

A small amount will likely cause nothing worse than minor stomach upset. This can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Large amounts of toilet paper may cause a gastric or intestinal obstruction. Monitor for lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

If it was just a small piece of paper towel, it will likely pass through the intestinal tract without problems. Watch Gizmo's poop for the next 3-4 days and you should see it when it comes out. Should Gizmo get diarrhea and then vomiting, you need to take him to your vet for an exam as then the paper may have caused an obstruction. However, I think it will leave the body via the natural way.

Hello. I would try feeding him a laxative & one way to do this is to take 1-2 pieces of bread & slather with Vaseline. You can repeat this in 6-8 hours & hopefully this will push the rest of the towel material through. If your dog vomits, do not feed any more & you may need to see your vet. But several small bites of cloth in a 45 pound dog should not cause a significant blockage. Give this a try & see if he becomes more regular. I would just keep an eye on Loki until you can get him to the vet. Straining can be caused by many different things, including rectal masses or polyps, enlarged prostate, painful or enlarged anal glands, constipation, diarrhea (it can look very similar to constipation!), intestinal obstruction, intestinal parasites, among a few less common things. After thorough examination by your vet, they may recommend diagnostics such as x-rays, bloodwork, or intestinal parasite screening to try to determine what could be the cause. Then appropriate treatment can be discussed. If you don't see Loki have a normal urination at least every 12 hours, this would be a medical emergency. You can call around to see if there are any open vets or call your vet clinic to see where they refer after-hours emergencies to.
