My dog ate toilet paper. Is it harmful? What symptoms to look for?

Oh dear! Dogs do love to chew and shred toilet paper when they can get to it - this is a very common occurrence :) The good news is, if he did swallow any of the paper, in most cases it will pass through without any problems. Toilet paper is very soft and tends to break up easily when it gets wet, so it would uncommon to see an intestinal obstruction caused by eating this. As long as Magnum is acting normal, you shouldn't need to worry. Signs of an obstruction would normally develop within 2-3 days, and would include vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, and/or not having regular bowel movements. If you see any signs of a problem, it would be a good idea to take him to your vet to be checked.

Toilet paper should pass, but may cause some digestive upset or cause blockage of the bowels if enough was eaten. That said, blood from the stomach is usually dark red or black, and blood from the rectum/anus is a brighter red color. If Brie has eaten any new treats or foods, that can also affect stool color. There is a possibility that Loki has an intestinal obstruction caused by the toilet paper. This is an emergency and he needs to be seen by your vet today or be taken to a veterinary clinic or pet ER. He will likely be hospitalised and x-rayed (with or without contrast), and observed while on iv fluids to hopefully watch him pass the paper with feces. The paper would likely dry out the feces and then he may be constipated and there is a chance that with fluid supplementation he may be able to pass the obstruction especially since toilet paper dissolves easily. However one can not rely on that, so there is also a chance that he will need surgery if the matter does not pass and obstructs the intestine.

An ordinary kitchen napkin should pass on its own if Ollie chewed up into bits. You may see some minor stomach upset. This can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Monitor for lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

If it was just a small piece of paper towel, it will likely pass through the intestinal tract without problems. Watch Gizmo's poop for the next 3-4 days and you should see it when it comes out.
