My dog ate a toilet paper roll. Should I call the vet or just monitor?

A small amount will likely cause nothing worse than minor stomach upset. This can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Large amounts of toilet paper may cause a gastric or intestinal obstruction. Monitor for lethargy, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. You have two options in this case. You can take Toby into a vet now to have vomiting induced to get the toy out. Or you can watch him. If you see signs of obstruction, including vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, have him seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Since Panda ate some foam padding yesterday and has ben vomiting and eating less, my main concern is that he has developed a stomach or intestinal obstruction. He needs to see a vet immediately for an exam and abdominal x-rays to try to determine if he is obstructed. Foreign body obstructions are a surgical emergency. I hope he's on the mend soon!

Dogs do love to chew and shred toilet paper when they can get to it - this is a very common occurrence :) The good news is, if he did swallow any of the paper, in most cases it will pass through without any problems. Toilet paper is very soft and tends to break up easily when it gets wet, so it would uncommon to see an intestinal obstruction caused by eating this. As long as Magnum is acting normal, you shouldn't need to worry. Signs of an obstruction would normally develop within 2-3 days, and would include vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, and/or not having regular bowel movements. If you see any signs of a problem, it would be a good idea to take him to your vet to be checked.

Toilet paper should pass, but may cause some digestive upset or cause blockage of the bowels if enough was eaten. That said, blood from the stomach is usually dark red or black, and blood from the rectum/anus is a brighter red color. If Brie has eaten any new treats or foods, that can also affect stool color. If the red stool and vomit only occurred once after eating the toilet paper, I would continue to monitor Brie for any other signs of a blockage, These include continued vomiting and diarrhea, blood in either still, hunched or tender abdomen, bloated abdomen, not wanting to eat or drink, or attempting to vomit or defecate without success, as these are all signs of a medical emergency. You may also want to offer a bland diet for a few days to help with any minor digestive upset. Boiled chicken and rice is an easy option on the stomach. If you suspect a blockage, the symptoms continue, or Brie isn't improving, vet care ASAP is best.
