My dog ate sweet potato pie. Will he be okay? What symptoms to watch?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Raw sweet potato should not be toxic to dogs. However, it is likely not easily digestible, and so may cause diarrhea. Another concern I would have is whether Kira ate a large chunk of the potato which may cause an obstruction in her stomach or intestines. For now, I would continue to monitor her. You can try offering her small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. This may help alleviate any GI upset. If she starts vomiting or becomes disinterested in food, or if her diarrhea does not improve within 1-2 days, I would get her to the vet. They can assess for a possible obstruction through physical exam and x-rays, and at minimum provide supportive medications to help get her feeling better quickly. Oh boy, Jessie! Well, there is nothing toxic in pie as long as you didn't add any artificial sweeteners. That said, that amount of sugar, fat, etc. may cause stomach upset.. vomiting or diarrhea. I would feed only a small meal for the next meal, and let the stomach rest. Watch for problems and see your vet if you notice any issues.

No worries. Potatoes and the skin are not toxic to pets, even raw. Maddie should be just fine. At the worse she may have a little upset stomach, in which case you can give her some bland chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days and she should be back to normal in no time. Take care of that little one!

I am sorry that Shelby has eaten your slice of pie, but I would not be overly concerned. I have looked up the ingredients in Costco’s pumpkin pie recipe and there does not seem to be any toxic ingredients. Nutmeg can be toxic for dogs, but it does not appear to be in their recipe. Because it is only one small slice Shelby should be fine, however, pie has a large amount of sugar and fat in it and this may cause some gastrointestinal upset. to help prevent this I would advise the following; Rest her stomach for 6 hours by withholding a meal Then provide a bland diet of boiled chicken breast skinless and steamed white rice. If you notice and vomiting, diarrhoea or discomfort she may have developed pancreatitis which is a common condition when dogs ingest a large amount of fatty food. This is unlikely however, if you suspect it please post a further question here on the forum or take her to see her veterinarian. There are no toxicity concerns with sweet potatoes in cats, With any new food, some animals that may have a sensitive digestive tract may have GI upset including diarrhea and vomiting. With this small of an ingestion I think it unlikely but would monitor for these signs and if they persist seek veterinary care.

Bubba will probably be fine as that is not a toxic dose of chocolate. He may have mild stomach upset from the sugar/fat in the food so watch for vomiting and diarrhea. If that occurs sometimes a bland diet for a few days is helpful but rarely a veterinarian visit is needed if it doesn't resolve on its own within a day or two.
