My dog ate raw sweet potato. Should I be worried? What to do?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Raw sweet potato should not be toxic to dogs. However, it is likely not easily digestible, and so may cause diarrhea. Another concern I would have is whether Kira ate a large chunk of the potato which may cause an obstruction in her stomach or intestines. For now, I would continue to monitor her. You can try offering her small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. This may help alleviate any GI upset. If she starts vomiting or becomes disinterested in food, or if her diarrhea does not improve within 1-2 days, I would get her to the vet. They can assess for a possible obstruction through physical exam and x-rays, and at minimum provide supportive medications to help get her feeling better quickly. Sweet potatoes are not toxic to dogs, so I would not normally expect this to cause any problems apart from some GI upset if she isn't used to eating human food like this. So your pup will probably be just fine :)

No worries. Potatoes and the skin are not toxic to pets, even raw. Maddie should be just fine. At the worse she may have a little upset stomach, in which case you can give her some bland chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days and she should be back to normal in no time. Take care of that little one!

Hello, Pilot should be fine as long as the potato wasn't moldy. Some molds may cause disorientation, seizures, and heart arrhythmias but this is most commonly seen in large animals. The potato may also cause some GI signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you note any of the above then have him evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Otherwise, you can continue to monitor him at home and keep any other potatoes away from him. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello, you should only attempt to induce vomiting with peroxide twice. If the potato was not moldy then Jody should be fine. He may have some diarrhea which may require anti-diarrhea medications, but otherwise, there are no toxins you need to worry about. If he did not chew the potato then this may be more of a problem as it could be too big and may cause an obstruction. If you think that he did not chew the potato or if you think the potato may have been moldy, then you can bring him to your veterinarian to have them induce vomiting and take radiographs tonight. Otherwise, you can monitor him at home for any vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if he does develop any of these tomorrow.
