My dog ate smoked salmon. Is it safe for dogs, even with parasites?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

My dog has been prescribed antibiotics (Synulox) as a preventative measure for a cut paw pad. Today I gave her the first pill, but she was being fussy so I wrapped the pill in a very small amount of supermarket bought Norwegian smoked salmon. I then found out that salmon can contain parasites that are harmful for dogs. On the package it says not to refreeze because it has already been frozen, so I assume it has been treated for parasites but just wanted to double-check with a Vet. Thank you.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I understand your concern, most salmon which is intended for human consumption is processed so as to remove any parasitic cysts present in the meat. Packaged smoked salmon is also likely to be heated as well during the smoking process. While most likely safe from an infectious standpoint, smoked salmon may have added flavors, salt, and natural fats which can cause gastrointestinal upset for Olivia when given in moderate quantities. I recommend hiding her pills in a small ball of canned dog food. I hope this helps and that Olivia gets well soon!
