My dog ate cold smoked salmon. Is it safe or should I be worried?

I understand your concern, most salmon which is intended for human consumption is processed so as to remove any parasitic cysts present in the meat. Packaged smoked salmon is also likely to be heated as well during the smoking process. While most likely safe from an infectious standpoint, smoked salmon may have added flavors, salt, and natural fats which can cause gastrointestinal upset for Olivia when given in moderate quantities. No, it's not safe to feed your dog uncooked salmon. Raw salmon can contain parasites and/or bacteria that can be harmful to dogs, and so they should never be fed raw fish. You may give it to her cooked, and make sure all of the bones are removed. I would only give her a small amount, as new foods can cause GI upset in dogs.

Hello. I think Alice should be fine. There might be some GI upset, possibly some diarrhea in the next 12-24 hours, but probably not much more than that. I, personally, do not recommended feeding any human foods to dogs, especially small breed dogs. They tend to have very sensitive stomachs, in general, and often if they start getting trained to eat human food, they will start refusing to eat dog food. So, keep that in mind. That being said, salmon (as long as it is thoroughly cooked) is not harmful and does have some beneficial qualities. I suggest you refer to this link for more information. I'm sorry to hear that Chief got into trouble today! The amount of garlic you are describing should not cause toxicity for a dog as big as Chief. Just keep an eye on him for any tummy upset (vomiting, diarrhea, off his food) or lethargy, and if these occur have him seen by your veterinarian.

It is likely Steve did not ingest a toxic dose. Monitor for lethargy, pale gums, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance for the next 24-72 hours. You may see some minor stomach upset which, in the absence of other symptoms, can be managed with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he develops any of the other symptoms, have him seem by your veterinarian.
