My dog ate shea butter and is throwing up. What should I do?

Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, causing sudden drops in blood sugar that can lead to seizures, liver failure, and even death in severe cases. If xylitol is listed on the ingredients, take your dog to an ER vet immediately. However, if xylitol is not a concern, it certainly sounds as if your puppy has some stomach upset. This could be a result of gastroenteritis from eating too much of a fatty food, or he may be developing pancreatitis. Definitely stop feeding him for the next 12-24 hours. When you begin feeding him again, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days before slowly transitioning back to his normal diet. If he continues vomiting today, he should be seen by a vet to assess his hydration and administer supportive care (fluids, anti-nausea medication, etc.). I hope he feels better soon!

This is usually designed to be completely harmless for dogs and the vomiting may be caused by a slight gastrointestinal irritation at this stage. As a first line approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Yikes! Butter isn't toxic, but it could potentially cause her to relapse to her recent problems since it is very high in fat. Hopefully not, but it can cause very greasy stools or even diarrhea for a day or two. If Maddie starts vomiting or has a poor appetite, then she should probably get checked out by the vet (again). If she is ok other than loose stools or diarrhea, I would wait for 48 hours, and see a vet if it is still going on at the end of that period.

Oh no, it's not good that MJ ate an entire bag of Reese's cups! While one doesn't contain a lot of chocolate, an entire bag of them may be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, one sign of which is vomiting. Because of this and his currently symptoms, I would take him into a vet immediately for treatment. He needs decontamination procedures in case he is suffering from chocolate toxicity. There is also the potential that enough foils could cause a GI blockage, and that needs to be ruled in or out as well. While she could develop dietary indiscretion from eating something high in fat, pumping her stomach would probably be a bit much. I would watch her closely for signs of dietary indiscretion like vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence and if observed have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment at that point. This has the potential to cause toxicity, but the amount was likely too small given her size. However, I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian, especially if the vomiting continues.
