My dog ate butter after recovering from GI upset. Is she okay?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old

Maddie just started feeling better after recouping from cloitus / gi upset and decided today would be a good day to jump on the counter and eat an entire stick of butter with the wrapper. Should I be concerned? Thank you!

Yikes! Butter isn't toxic, but it could potentially cause her to relapse to her recent problems since it is very high in fat. Hopefully not, but it can cause very greasy stools or even diarrhea for a day or two. If Maddie starts vomiting or has a poor appetite, then she should probably get checked out by the vet (again). If she is ok other than loose stools or diarrhea, I would wait for 48 hours, and see a vet if it is still going on at the end of that period.
