My dog ate Reese's cups and foil, now throwing up. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 9 years and 6 months old | 19 lbs

My dachshund ate a full bag of Reese’s cups last night. Foil and all! He is throwing up foil balls now. Is there anything else I can do?

Oh no, it's not good that MJ ate an entire bag of Reese's cups! While one doesn't contain a lot of chocolate, an entire bag of them may be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, one sign of which is vomiting. Because of this and his currently symptoms, I would take him into a vet immediately for treatment. He needs decontamination procedures in case he is suffering from chocolate toxicity. There is also the potential that enough foils could cause a GI blockage, and that needs to be ruled in or out as well. Either take him into your normal vet or find an ER vet clinic or vet on call if your normal vet is closed. Best of luck!

Oh my, that wasn't good that Hudson ate all that chocolate! If he ate half of a 3.17 ounce bar of milk chocolate, that's 1.6 ounces. At his weight, that about of chocolate will cause a minimal to no reaction. Add in the two giant Reese's cups, and I would suspect you may at most see a minimal reaction. Do NOT induce vomiting, I never recommend doing it at home. Not only is there a high risk of aspiration, but hydrogen peroxide can and does cause gastritis and esophagitis often worse than the presenting problem. Given that he most likely will have a minimal reaction, I would monitor him for now. Keep in mind that it can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to appear. If you do see a reaction in the form of vomiting, diarrhea, or upset stomach, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. My 10lb dog ate Reese's Cups. Is chocolate poisoning a risk?

What a scary experience! I totally understand being concerned. The chocolate in reeses cups is mostly sugar and milk, so even eating 6 and even being so small, Elliott should be ok. It's still a good idea to keep an eye out for vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, and shaking/tremors. If you see any of those signs, I'd recommend going to a vet for supportive care.

My dog ate chocolate and wrappers 24 hours ago. Should I see a vet?

It's best to take her to the vet considering the amount of chocolate ingested is unknown and she was vomiting (an early sign of chocolate toxicity). It's also concerning that she ate the wrappers, because these can cause problems in the intestines as well. The vets will be able to monitor Rane for further signs of toxicity and give medication as necessary to keep things from getting worse. I hope that helps and all is well with Rane.

My 70lb dog ate Reese's. Is chocolate toxic or is fat the issue?

As I'm sure you know, Reese's contain chocolate and chocolate is toxic to dogs. At 70lbs of body weight, he can eat about 30 average size peanut butter cups without suffering chocolate intoxication; however he may get gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea and pancreatitis. Fatty foods can give dogs pancreatitis, which can be life threatening. The best thing to do is take him into the vet to have vomiting induced to get rid of the peanut cups. If you chose not to do this, you need to watch him for vomiting, diarrhea, vomiting undigested food, lethargy, a loss of appetite, and vomiting water. If you see any of those signs, it's an emergency and he will have to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

That's a lot of sugar for a dog to eat! The good news is that tootsie rolls do not contain much chocolate, and depending on the type of sandwich cookies Molly ate, she may not have eaten enough chocolate to cause a problem with toxicity. Given that she was vomiting, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. My dog ate Hershey Kisses and is vomiting wrappers. Is he okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Louie! One Hershey kiss weighs about 4.46 grams so 20 is about 89.2 grams of milk chocolate. For Louie that is a toxic dose where vomiting and diarrhea will occur. Since he is vomiting he should be seen by your Vet for an exam, anti-nausea medications and fluids today. If he is having diarrhea they can provide medications to help with that. Once the vomiting stops he should be fed a bland diet for 3-7 days. You can purchase a diet from your Vet or cook for him by boiling chicken or hamburger and combining it with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. I wish Louie the best!
