My dog ate a mouse, now vomiting, lethargic, shaky. What to do?

He may not be eating due to dietary indiscretion from eating the bird or mouse or it could even be due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. I am afraid that if he is not drinking water he may be becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and most importantly start him on medications to make him feel better. Hi and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many causes of vomiting and diarrhea, especially in a puppy. Certainly the mouse could have caused an upset stomach; however there are some other causes of vomiting and diarrhea. Some potential causes are intestinal parasites, Parvovirus, toxicity or even a foreign body. Since Josie is vomiting, lethargic and is very young I would recommend being evaluated by a local vet for a physical exam where they may recommend x-rays, fecal exam and/or Parvovirus test. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ziggy! Eating a mouse shouldn't be a big deal. Mice are intermediate hosts for some intestinal parasites and if the mouse died from eating rat/mouse poison it could be a problem. Since Ziggy is a big dog I doubt if the mouse died from eating rat poison he would be affected. As long as the vomiting and diarrhea are self limiting he should be ok. Hope this helps!

With a dog Ace's size, the mouse likely will not cause any problems such as an intestinal obstruction. It may cause vomiting / diarrhea, but he will likely be fine as the bones will dissolve in the stomach. I would monitor for vomiting, lethargy, inappetance, etc. and have a veterinarian examine him should any of these symptoms arise. I hope this helps! You'll want to be sure to keep an eye on Dude. If the vomiting is persistent or you notice and diarrhea or change in behavior, you'll want to visit your local Veterinarian as soon as possible. You can offer him a bland diet of chicken and rice to let the stomach heal in the mean time. Don't forget to call the exterminator! Please keep us in the loop.

Vomiting and weight loss can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction (especially since you report he eats mice), pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. Hip pain is most likely unrelated and may represent some degree of arthritis. I recommend that you have Cooper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. I would keep an eye on Abby for signs of any distress or illness such as vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, etc which would warrant a trip to the ER vet. As mice can also carry parasites, scheduling a vet visit when you can and getting Abby up to date on dewormings, etc can help prevent future illness.
