My dog ate Hershey Kisses and is vomiting wrappers. Is he okay?

My dog ate about 20 Hershey kisses with the wrappers. He’s been pooping out wrappers and committing them up today and yesterday. Is he okay

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Louie!

One Hershey kiss weighs about 4.46 grams so 20 is about 89.2 grams of milk chocolate. For Louie that is a toxic dose where vomiting and diarrhea will occur. Since he is vomiting he should be seen by your Vet for an exam, anti-nausea medications and fluids today. If he is having diarrhea they can provide medications to help with that. Once the vomiting stops he should be fed a bland diet for 3-7 days. You can purchase a diet from your Vet or cook for him by boiling chicken or hamburger and combining it with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day.

The diarrhea did the job it was meant to do, your dog got rid of the foil and almond. It is not clear whether the diarrhea was caused by the foreign body (ie the foil) or the chocolate. One Hershey kiss should not be toxic enough to cause a serious problem. Take your dog (is her name really "Chocolate"? What irony ;-)) off food for about 12 hrs, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of rice with her normal food over the next two days until she is at the normal quantity of her regular food. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day, or if she is lethargic and dehydrated,you will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.

Ozzie is such a beautiful girl, but she was very naughty to eat all that candy! Luckily Kit Kats and Hershey kisses do not contain a lot of chocolate, and with her weight and the amount she ate, she likely did not consume enough to cause a severe toxic reaction. You could see a mild reaction including vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination, and increased heart rate. If you do see the GI signs I mentioned, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

Now sometimes dogs will react differently to chocolate, and a smaller amount can cause a more severe reaction. Watch for muscle tremors, seizures, and a racing heart rate. Should you see any of those signs, take Ozzie into a vet immediately. Keep in mind it can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to occur, so watch over her tonight and all tomorrow. Hopefully she will be just fine. I hope this helps, good luck!

Chocolate toxicity can cause a significant amount of GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea), but does not tend to cause long term problems unless the dose was high enough to cause seizures. The foil wrappers should not cause a problem unless there is enough foil to cause an obstruction in the GI tract. My puppy ate a Hershey's Kiss (chocolate & wrapper). What should I do?

Well that wasn't good of Winston to eat that Hershey's kiss! The good news is that one is not likely to cause any problems. It's very small and doesn't contain enough chocolate to cause any toxic symptoms. He should be fine, so I wouldn't do anything for him except monitor him to be safe. My dog ate chocolate brownies and is throwing up. Is he okay?

The effects of chocolate on a pet depends on a few factors: how big the pet is, how much they ate, and how dark the chocolate is. The darker the chocolate, the higher the concentration of theobromine, the ingredient that pets are sensitive to. Cocoa powder can have up to 10 percent theobromine. It's all dependent on how dark the chocolate is, where the cacao beans are grown and the brand. According to Hershey's, the theobromine content for their different types of chocolate is as follows. 1½ ounce Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar - 74 milligrams 1½ ounce Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate Bar - 184 milligrams 1½ ounce semi-sweet chocolate chips - 165 milligrams 1½ ounce unsweetened baking chocolate - 466 milligrams 1 Hershey's Kiss - 8.2 milligrams 2 tbsp chocolate syrup - 70 milligrams Theobromine is digested and metabolized very slowly in dogs. The alkaline substance increases the heart rate and slows blood pressure. It also increases urination, causing dehydration. In addition, many digestive problems can occur. Symptoms to watch for generally occur in the first 12 hours. They include: Diarrhea Excitability Increased urination Irritability Muscle tremors Rapid pulse Restlessness Vomiting Left untreated, the dog can develop seizures and die from ingesting too much chocolate. This is where it is important to know exactly how much your dog has eaten. It's important to contact your veterinarian if your dog eats chocolate. In mild cases, you'll be advised to induce vomiting within the first two hours and then watch for signs of chocolate poisoning. If anything alarming occurs, seek veterinary care immediately. If veterinary care is necessary, charcoal is used to absorb as much theobromine as possible. The stomach may be pumped to remove additional chocolate before it digests. The heart is closely monitored and arrhythmias will be treated if they occur. IV fluids may be ordered to prevent dehydration. Seizures will be treated with medications. According to the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, ingesting 20 milligrams of theobromine can cause mild poisoning. Ingesting 60 milligrams can lead to seizures. A lot of this depends on the dog's size.

Fortunately that is not enough chocolate to be of a toxic dose in Goofy. It may upset his stomach though and cause vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24 hours though. You can monitor for any changes or symptoms then seek a vet if needed.

My 15lb dog ate milk chocolate hearts. Should I be concerned?

You can expect mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite). The amount is not enough to cause serious toxicity in a 15lb dog, but you should still monitor for tremors, increased heart rate, hyperactivity or seizures. Minor GI upset can usually be managed at home with a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Ideally, Mojito should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Either can induce vomiting if the ingestion has happened in the last two hours, then administer activated charcoal to further inhibit absorption.

My dog ate Reese's cups and foil, now throwing up. What should I do?

Oh no, it's not good that MJ ate an entire bag of Reese's cups! While one doesn't contain a lot of chocolate, an entire bag of them may be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, one sign of which is vomiting. Because of this and his currently symptoms, I would take him into a vet immediately for treatment. He needs decontamination procedures in case he is suffering from chocolate toxicity. There is also the potential that enough foils could cause a GI blockage, and that needs to be ruled in or out as well. Either take him into your normal vet or find an ER vet clinic or vet on call if your normal vet is closed. Best of luck!

My dog ate white chocolate Hershey kisses and foil. Is it toxic?

It does matter that it is white chocolate - fortunately white chocolate is not toxic! It could cause some mild stomach upset so if Xina vomits or develops diarrhea I’d recommend seeing your vet. Otherwise no treatment is required.
