My dog ate M&Ms and is sick. What should I do for chocolate poisoning?

That's a lot of sugar for a dog to eat! The good news is that tootsie rolls do not contain much chocolate, and depending on the type of sandwich cookies Molly ate, she may not have eaten enough chocolate to cause a problem with toxicity. Given that she was vomiting, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. The ice cream could be the cause of the diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. It depends on the size of the dog and the amount she ate, but chances are good that, unless she ate several pounds of M&Ms, she will likely only end up with a sore belly and possibly diarrhea. If she ate them less than 1 hour ago, you can induce vomiting by giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, about 1 cc per pound. One tablespoon is about 5 cc. A turkey baster will work if you don't have a syringe. Longer than an hour and it will have already moved into the intestines. Ideally, your pet should be seen by your veterinarian to ensure that she will be okay. Your vet will do an exam and possibly bloodwork to determine if any further treatment is needed.

Oh no, it's not good that MJ ate an entire bag of Reese's cups! While one doesn't contain a lot of chocolate, an entire bag of them may be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, one sign of which is vomiting. Because of this and his currently symptoms, I would take him into a vet immediately for treatment. He needs decontamination procedures in case he is suffering from chocolate toxicity. There is also the potential that enough foils could cause a GI blockage, and that needs to be ruled in or out as well. Either take him into your normal vet or find an ER vet clinic or vet on call if your normal vet is closed. Best of luck!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Demon, great name by the way. I would just continue to monitor him and see if the signs don't resolve. Sounds like he is getting better and if he was going to have more problems with the chocolate ingestion, it would have occurred shortly after the exposure. If the problem continues, call your veterinarian and follow their recommendation. I hope Demon gets better soon.
