My dog ate ranch dressing. Is a small amount safe? What should I do?

I would not be worried that KD will have any problems from licking the table cloth. Certainly ranch salad dressing can cause an upset stomach in dogs or cats, but they have to ingest a large amount of cause any problem. The concern is not only the sodium, but the garlic and onion powder in the ranch dip as well as the fat content of the sour cream. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis. A small amount of these foods should not cause any serious issues. Some dogs may develop diarrhea or an upset stomach from new or different foods. To lessen the chance of this, I would feed him a bland diet (boiled chicken and cooked, white rice in a 1:1 ratio is a good option) for the next day or two! While onions are toxic to dogs, it requires a large quantity of real onions to cause a problem to dogs. Signs of onion toxicity include lethargy, pale gums or red-brown gums, vomiting, or drooling. If Jax is still acting normally and it has been over 2-3 hours from the time of ingestion, he should be OK. He may have an upset stomach and have some diarrhea for the next couple days, but he shouldn't experience any serious complications. Italian dressing often contains onion or garlic, which can be toxic to dogs. Toxicity signs can be visible even after 24-48 hours since ingestion. The safest (and recommended) option is to take her to your veterinarian for a check-up. If this is not an option at this moment, please withhold food for the next 4-6 hours and then start feeding back again with some chicken and boiled rice in small portions every 4-6 hours.
