My dog ate something off ground and vomited kibble. Is it toxic?

Hi there! As long as Nova is acting normal, I wouldn't be concerned. It's likely that he threw up the packet because it couldn't be digested and was causing some irritation to his stomach. I'm not sure what specific kind of packet it was (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.?) but most common condiments are not toxic to dogs and should not cause any serious problems.

You can try to calculate the exact amount of chocolate in the donut and call your local emergency clinic and they can tell you over the phone if the amount is toxic or not, but it is unlikely to be. Otherwise watch for vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, hyperactivity. If these occur get her to a vet right away. These are unlikely to occur however. Best of luck with Pixie!

I am very sorry to hear that Nova is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. I would believe the most likely cause is a dietary indiscretion, as puppies are known for getting into things they shouldn't. Because you have only noticed one episode, I would continue to monitor Nova at home. Rest Nova's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea if it were to begin. If Nova does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Nova seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. I would not give any more hydrogen peroxide either. I recommend feeding him a normal meal and ensuring he has plenty of access to water. I hope this is helpful!

I would be concerned that it could cause Skye some GI upset such as vomiting. If it does, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. It sounds like Princess may have eaten something naughty (trash, toilet paper, paper plate, sock, toy stuffing, other) that decided to come back up. The fact that she has shown no signs today is promising. If she has eaten and kept it down, you are likely in the clear. Caveat: Do watch her closely for the next 2-3 days because if a smaller piece of whatever it was did get through and gets lodged in the intestine, you'll see lots more vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. If this happens, it's time to see the vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that. How affected Nova will be depends on how much chocolate there is in those granola bars. If it is just the typical granola bar that only contains a few chips then she is likely going to be ok but again would depend on the amount. If this happened recently within the last 2 hours, there is still time to induce vomiting. You can always contact ASPCS animal poison center to let them know exactly how much chocolate there is which will depend on the type of bars (let them know the kind).
