Puppy vomited yellow after breakfast and is whining. What to do?

If a pet is vomiting, it is best to withhold all food and medicine for at least 12 hours. Afterwards, a bland diet can be offered in small, frequent amounts. It is never recommended to give human medications to your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Some medications can be toxic or may complicate any underlying condition. If she can keep the water down, continue with small frequent amounts. No more than a couple tablespoons (20-30 mls) at a time. Have her examined by your veterinarian in the morning. The foods she ate can certainly cause vomiting, but it is best to have serious illness or foreign body ruled out by the vet.

I am very sorry to hear that Tye is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. I would believe the most likely cause in a lung dog like Tye is gastrointestinal worms or a gastrointestinal infection. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor Tye at home. Here is what you can do for him over the next 24 hours; Rest Tye’s gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. This will tempt him to eat while also being healthy for gut recovery. You can also purchase Hill’s I/D from a veterinarian, which is a premade food which will have the same effect. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea if he is experiencing any of that. In the longer term I would also advise switching his dog food brand, in case he is not doing well because of his current food. It could very well be an upset stomach. Monitor Nova to see if the vomiting continues. An ER situation presents itself as a pet that is continuously vomiting without stopping, pale gums, or the pet being unresponsive. Give her time to see if her stomach settles. Fast her for the next 12 hrs and then try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if that helps settle things down. If she continues to wretch for more than an hour, continuously, or ever seems like she is in despair, then yes its best to take her to the ER for further evaluation. Poor Nova! Offer him a bland diet. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I also recommend to call the veterinarian and ask about medications to soothe the stomach and prevent nausea like Cerenia, and antibiotic like Metronidazole, a probiotic like FortiFlora and an appetite stimulant like Entyce. As in puppies this presentation is commonly dietary related, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 6 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 4 hours for the following 48hours. Other potential common causes are intestinal parasites and bacterial infection, but self limiting episodes dietary related are by far the most common ones. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

If he is otherwise acting fine, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see how he does with that.
