My puppy ate a dead mouse and is vomiting. Should I call the vet?

My dog found a dead mouse last night and now today he is vomiting but acting otherwise normal for a puppy

You'll want to be sure to keep an eye on Dude. If the vomiting is persistent or you notice and diarrhea or change in behavior, you'll want to visit your local Veterinarian as soon as possible. You can offer him a bland diet of chicken and rice to let the stomach heal in the mean time. Don't forget to call the exterminator! Please keep us in the loop.

Oh dear! I'm assuming that Lebowski possibly ate the dead mouse or licked at it. If he otherwise did not have any direct contact with the mouse, it is unlikely that this is related to today's vomiting. If he ingested any part of the dead mouse, I would be concerned about a possible exposure to rat poison (since the cause of the mouse's death is unknown) or even simply an upset stomach from eating something unusual. I do recommend taking him to a vet for an exam and blood clotting tests to determine if he developed any blood clotting issues from eating the mouse. However, if Lebowski did not eat or directly contact the mouse, you can try withholding food for 6-8 hours before offering a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice several times per day for the next few days before gradually transitioning back to his normal diet. I hope that he is feeling better soon!

Make sure the ingested animal did not die from rodenticide. If so, it is possible your puppy will suffer secondary exposure and may require veterinary attention. If not, monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or lethargy. See your vet if you notice any of these signs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Oscar isn't feeling well. I would recommend Oscar be evaluated by a veterinarian; hat is a large number of times that he has vomited, and with him not feeling well, I would recommend he be seen. There is the possibility that he ate something in addition to the mouse; and if the mouse caused such GI upset, he may need some medications to get his GI system normalized. I would recommend he be evaluated by his veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (xrays, etc) and start any treatment that he may need. Good luck!

My puppy ate a mouse. Why is she vomiting, has diarrhea, and is tired?

Hi and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many causes of vomiting and diarrhea, especially in a puppy. Certainly the mouse could have caused an upset stomach; however there are some other causes of vomiting and diarrhea. Some potential causes are intestinal parasites, Parvovirus, toxicity or even a foreign body. Since Josie is vomiting, lethargic and is very young I would recommend being evaluated by a local vet for a physical exam where they may recommend x-rays, fecal exam and/or Parvovirus test. Dog vomiting and diarrhea after mice exposure. Should I go to ER?

Oh my. Poor guy. Rats can carry a lot of diseases, and his symptoms are suggestive of a possible infection. I would absolutely consider taking him to a vet today. If the only option is the ER vet then that is a good option at this point. It seems his symptoms have progressed and he should be evaluated and treated as quickly as possible. My dog killed a rat but didn't eat it. She vomited. Is my child safe?

You probably do not need to be concerned since Puppy did not actually eat the rat. However, if you feel like she is acting abnormally, like vomiting or coughing excessively or acting more lethargic than normal, I would recommend taking her in to the vet just to make sure nothing is going on. There are some diseases that can be spread from rat to dog but with such limited interaction Puppy is probably fine. My only other concern would be if there was any rat poison around that the rat or Puppy could have gotten in to. If so, this could cause some bleeding issues in Puppy. Your vet can run a simple blood test to make sure this is not an issue.

My dog ate a dead rat. What should I do if it happened a while ago?

There are two things you can do: 1) nothing, just watch your dog for diarrhea and/or vomiting or paleness. If yoru dog vomits/gets diarrhea do the following: I would fast Bandit for 12 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. Should he get lethargic, and/or pale (check his gums), he needs to be seen by a vet as the rat may have died of rodenticide. OR 2) if your dog ate the rat within the past 90 minutes, take him to a vet to have him regurgitate the rat with a medication called apomorphine.
