My dog ate a mouse and has diarrhea. When should I see a vet?

Oh my. Poor guy. Rats can carry a lot of diseases, and his symptoms are suggestive of a possible infection. I would absolutely consider taking him to a vet today. If the only option is the ER vet then that is a good option at this point. It seems his symptoms have progressed and he should be evaluated and treated as quickly as possible. Hi and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many causes of vomiting and diarrhea, especially in a puppy. Certainly the mouse could have caused an upset stomach; however there are some other causes of vomiting and diarrhea. Some potential causes are intestinal parasites, Parvovirus, toxicity or even a foreign body. Since Josie is vomiting, lethargic and is very young I would recommend being evaluated by a local vet for a physical exam where they may recommend x-rays, fecal exam and/or Parvovirus test. I would recommend Oscar be evaluated by a veterinarian; hat is a large number of times that he has vomited, and with him not feeling well, I would recommend he be seen. There is the possibility that he ate something in addition to the mouse; and if the mouse caused such GI upset, he may need some medications to get his GI system normalized. I would recommend he be evaluated by his veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (xrays, etc) and start any treatment that he may need. Good luck!

I would keep an eye on Abby for signs of any distress or illness such as vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, etc which would warrant a trip to the ER vet. As mice can also carry parasites, scheduling a vet visit when you can and getting Abby up to date on dewormings, etc can help prevent future illness.

You'll want to be sure to keep an eye on Dude. If the vomiting is persistent or you notice and diarrhea or change in behavior, you'll want to visit your local Veterinarian as soon as possible. You can offer him a bland diet of chicken and rice to let the stomach heal in the mean time. Don't forget to call the exterminator! Please keep us in the loop.

Since he is going every 3-4 hours it might be a good idea to take him to the vet to prescribe medications to help resolve the diarrhea, especially since he is going in the house at night. If you wanted to try some treatment at home, you could withhold food for 12 hours and then try a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice. If the diarrhea has improved then continue the bland diet for a few days and slowly transition back to his normal food. You could also add a dog probiotic to his diet. Proviable Forte Kit has a probiotic capsule and paste for diarrhea. If the diarrhea continues then he should definitely been seen by your vet.

You can change his food to boiled chicken and rice as this is very bland. You can also get probiotics from any pet store to start. If he starts vomiting or has a decrease in appetite, or starts with bloody diarrhea, then he needs to be seen by your vet. If it continues past 48 hours with no improvement, then I would get him checked also
