My dog ate Loxicom post-op, has dark stool. Should I call vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 6 months and 17 days old | 22 lbs

The last part of my question was cut off. It read 'The dog has been eating and drinking normally, had a looser, darker stool yesterday, and the rest of his stools since then are all normal. He has been happy playful (despite trying to keep him calm post-op!). What should I do?

I would still have Rover checked out by a vet to be safe. Overdoses of Loxicom can cause acute kidney failure, and that will take a couple of days for it to show symptoms. It's best to have his kidney function checked now with bloodworm and again in a few days to make sure they are working well. I'd bring him into a vet now. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

That's not good that your husband overdosed Rover with the Loxicom! Two signs of toxicity from it are diarrhea and dark stools, which indicate bleeding from the upper GI tract. Unfortunately the rest of your post was cut off, and the last bit of information I got was "and the rest ar...." I'm not sure what other symptoms he may be showing, but because he is showing two signs of toxicity, it's best that he's seen by a vet right away. Too much of it can result in severe gastric ulceration and acute kidney failure. He needs to be treated for the black stools and diarrhea, and have his kidney function checked to make sure they are working ok. Please take him into a vet now.

Black stool is indeed concerning, and if Achilles did in fact eat Aleve this would indicate bleeding inside the GI tract. I'm sure your vet advised you to be alert to this complication. Sucralfate can help when there are GI ulcers (this is one of the complications caused by an overdose of NSAIDs) but it may not be all he needs to recover successfully. Often these dogs sustain liver and kidney damage, and need to recover in a hospital with IV fluid therapy. Finally, depending on how much he ingested, he may be at risk for perforation of the stomach, and this is an extremely serious complication that requires surgery. If he is not doing well at this point I would urge you to seek immediate follow-up care.

Is Loxicom safe for my senior dog with kidney disease and arthritis?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Brino has kidney disease, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. like Loxiom should be avoided. Even half a dose of Loxiom can have detrimental effect on kidneys if used chronically. So, the answer is absolutely yes, Brino should be weaned off Loxiom and paracetamol or other pain killers (tramadol, gabapentin, amantadine etc) should be used instead.

My dog ate ibuprofen, has black stool, and won't eat. Is it serious?

Poor Ben! Black stool can indicate that he has blood in his stool due to intestinal bleeding or ulcerations caused by the Ibuprofen. He probably had normal bloodwork on Friday because Ibuprofen (NSAID) can cause delayed problems (kidney, liver, GI ulcerations and GI bleeding) for up to 72 hrs after ingestion. With that said I would highly recommend taking Ben in to your local ER clinic right away for medical treatment. The vet will likely give him IV fluid therapy (to help preserve kidney function), repeat his bloodwork, give medications to treat GI ulcers, and GI coating medication (Sucralfate). I hope that you can get him in quickly for treatment because time is of the essence. I hope that your furry friend turns out ok. Best wishes!

What if my dog ate human Meloxicam and vets are closed?

Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Katie just ingested a very high dose of meloxicam. The big problem with an overdose of meloxicam (or any other NSAID) is that it can definitively result in side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration (which may manifest as black, tarry stools which basically means digested blood), kidney disease, liver disease and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I advice that you take Katie to a veterinarian (perhaps a bit farther from you) for evaluation and further treatment. If it has been less than 2 hours, vomiting could still be induced which could make the outcome better. If there is no way possible you can do that then take her first thing in the morning tomorrow. That class of medicines have potential to cause a GI ulcers which can cause vomiting and dark stool (digested blood) Taking him to the vet is the best option sonthey can also run blood work to check the kidneys as that can also be a side effect of that class of medicine.
