My dog ate ibuprofen, has black stool, and won't eat. Is it serious?

Black stool is indeed concerning, and if Achilles did in fact eat Aleve this would indicate bleeding inside the GI tract. I'm sure your vet advised you to be alert to this complication. Sucralfate can help when there are GI ulcers (this is one of the complications caused by an overdose of NSAIDs) but it may not be all he needs to recover successfully. Often these dogs sustain liver and kidney damage, and need to recover in a hospital with IV fluid therapy. Finally, depending on how much he ingested, he may be at risk for perforation of the stomach, and this is an extremely serious complication that requires surgery. If he is not doing well at this point I would urge you to seek immediate follow-up care.

I agree with your vet to keep an eye on Calcifer and if his symptoms continue or worsen, to bring him in. Keeping him happy, eating, and spending a little time together to cuddle may help your own nerves as well!

Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

Ibuprofen intoxication can cause stomach upset, ulceration in the stomach and, if ingested in larger amounts, problems with kidneys. Typically, the symptoms occur within 24-48hrs from ibuprofen ingestion, so if you dog ate the pill 5 days ago, most likely everything is fine. As long as she is not having any gastrointestinal signs at present (no vomiting, no blood in stools, good appetite) and she is passing urine as normal, most likely there is nothing to worry about.

Hello from far away! I am sorry to hear Brunp is having some issues. Black stool is a sign of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. A gastric ulcer could be at play here and may explain his inappetence as well but you will wan to take him back into your veterinarian to confirm and rule out other causes as well as Rx the appropriate medication. I would try and feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. Plain unflavored yogurt can also help soothe the stomach. Please take Brunp in to see his veterinarian as soon as possible. Hi, is it more likely that Baya has eaten something like a possible foreign body (plastic, rubber, bones for example) or more like food that has gone off ? The mineral oil could help with anything that is lodged in her tummy, as long as it can pass but you probably need to give it quite regularly. Be careful also that she swallows it properly and not to push it down her trachea and chest if your are using a syringe. My honest advise is to have Baya checked over, search for a vet that works Saturdays or an emergency vet clinic. I am worried that if she is left untreated with something serious Monday will be too late.
