My small dog ate licorice and is sick. What should I do now?

Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Milk chocolate is less toxic than dark chocolate and it is dose - dependent. In smaller doses it my just cause vomiting and diarrhea. In larger doses it can cause neurological signs and even death. So if he ate a large amount, I would take him to the veterinarian so they can induce vomiting and get it out if his system.

Please take your pet to the vet immediately. There is a high potential that these red berries (which can be a number of toxic berries to pets) were toxic to your pet and now the toxin is in his blood stream. He will need to be detoxed, which can only be done with fluid therapy and cathartics to help coat his intestinal lining to limit any further absorption of the toxin. He/she needs to be seen right away for her overall health and well being because this cannot be treated with any at home remedies or over the counter medications.

Some candy contains xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. It causes low blood sugar and liver failure. Another possibility is a stomach or intestinal obstruction (the wrappers are stuck and need to be surgically removed) or pancreatitis secondary to the candy. After the Vet does an exam they will want to run full blood work and possibly belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Gretchen the best!

Oh no, it's not good that MJ ate an entire bag of Reese's cups! While one doesn't contain a lot of chocolate, an entire bag of them may be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, one sign of which is vomiting. Because of this and his currently symptoms, I would take him into a vet immediately for treatment. He needs decontamination procedures in case he is suffering from chocolate toxicity. There is also the potential that enough foils could cause a GI blockage, and that needs to be ruled in or out as well. Either take him into your normal vet or find an ER vet clinic or vet on call if your normal vet is closed. Best of luck!

Yes, she may have some vomiting and/or diarrhea. I don't think you should do anything differently. Usually these symptoms are self-limiting, meaning they will go away on their own with no treatment. If the symptoms last longer than 48 hours then you need to take her to a vet for an exam.

Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care. That's a lot of sugar for a dog to eat! The good news is that tootsie rolls do not contain much chocolate, and depending on the type of sandwich cookies Molly ate, she may not have eaten enough chocolate to cause a problem with toxicity. Given that she was vomiting, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
