My dog ate red berries from a plant and is now very sick. What should I do?

My dog ate berries from a weed by the fence they where red and now shes super sick and wont eat

Please take your pet to the vet immediately. There is a high potential that these red berries (which can be a number of toxic berries to pets) were toxic to your pet and now the toxin is in his blood stream. He will need to be detoxed, which can only be done with fluid therapy and cathartics to help coat his intestinal lining to limit any further absorption of the toxin. He/she needs to be seen right away for her overall health and well being because this cannot be treated with any at home remedies or over the counter medications.

Poor pup! Without knowing what kind of berries they were, it's hard to say whether she just has an upset stomach, or a life-threatening toxicity problem. I would recommend having her seen by an emergency vet right away - he/she can induce vomiting if the ingestion was recent, and may also do blood work to help determine how serious this is. She may need to be hospitalized for supportive care and IV fluids depending on what is found.

It sounds like these berries may be poisonous, and Athena should be seen by a vet right away. There are a number of plants and berries that are toxic to dogs, and it could be that she ate a variety that is toxic to dogs. I recommend taking her into your vet right away, and bringing with you a sample of the berries and the weed so that your vet can identify the plant, and institute the appropriate therapy for her.

My 4-month labradoodle ate ilex berries and is vomiting. What to do?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ilex can cause toxicity that is usually limited to GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc). If your dog is now happy and running and playing and eating normally, then I wouldn't do anything else. If he is still vomiting, not eating, or seems sore in his abdomen, then he likely needs medications to help with his toxicity, and if vomiting and diarrhea is severe he might need IV fluids. If he is still unwell 1 hour after ingesting the plants, and not wanting to eat, then I would bring him to a vet right away. Best of luck with your little one, I hope he is feeling better.

My small dog ate licorice and is sick. What should I do now?

I would take her to a vet asap as there is a compound in black licorice that can be toxic in high doses. It can cause issues with blood pressure. Hopefully she has brought most of it up when she vomited though. The vet will be able to check her out and make sure all is okay. She will likely have s sire stomach regardless, and the vet will be able to administer some medications to settle the stomach and make her feel better.

Typically you would see pretty immediately signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, weakness, and heart rhythm abnormalities. You can take Chester into the vet to make sure everything is ok physically, and I would remove the bush from your property and do not allow him access to any. Best of luck.

My dog ate unknown mushrooms and got sick. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am concerned that because he vomited so many times and had diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated. Also, mushrooms can result in liver toxicity in dogs that tends to be significant. Even if he vomited some of it, there is still likely some left in his system. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check some basic lab work to check for signs of liver toxicity and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog ate cherry seeds and is very ill. What urgent treatment is needed?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry to hear that Harley is having this issue. Cherry seeds/pits, as I am sure you know by now, are toxic to dogs. They contain cyanide which is highly toxic. Since the bonding of the chemical compound of cyanide must be stopped as soon as possible, treatment will be the top priority at this point. Treatment needs to be instituted ASAP. The longer you wait, the worse the prognosis. He should have been placed on intravenous fluids and not just given SQ fluids. SQ fluids is not enough to flush out his system. Sodium nitrate/sodium thiosulfate should be given if your vet has it available. Hydroxocobalamin (vitamin B12a ) is also used as a cyanide antidote. So, in my opinion, he needs to be hospitalized with intravenous fluids and injections of Cerenia (anti-emetic) and more supportive care to give him the best chance at recovery. Hope this helps.
