My dog ate leather shoelaces. Is it dangerous and what should I do?

If he ate the shoe-lace within the past 90 minutes, take your cat to a PetER where they can make him vomit and hopefully bring up the lace. If it has been longer, then you need to monitor him for diarrhea and vomiting and if this occurs, take him to a PetER for an exam as he then may have an obstruction of his intestine. Should the lace pass naturally and you see it sticking out from his anus, do NOT pull on it. It needs to be pushed out naturally. Pulling on it may damage your cat's intestine.

So sorry for your shoes! It really depends how large the pieces were when they went down. If he tore it into pieces, which I would expect, then it may cause a GI upset but unlikely to cause an obstruction. The best thing to do is monitor him for any vomiting or diarrhea as this can be signs if a problem. There is no need to take him anywhere right now

At this stage feeding bulky food and monitoring is the best way to go. Signs of intestinal blockage are obvious and you will be able to notice them right away. Dogs with a blockage go off their food, vomit and show abdominal pain. They become weak and lethargic. What is also very important, dogs with a blockage are not passing any stools (soemtimes they try to pass but they are not able to). So, for now keep any eye on your dog and if you see any of these signs get in touch with your way right away. He is a large dog, so there is a good chance that he will pass the piece of leather in his stools.

If he chewed it into small enough bits, it may pass on its own. If he swallowed big chunks, there is a risk of obstruction. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Seek veterinary attention if Cody develops any of these symptoms.

Hi and thanks for posting! Any type of foreign object or material ingested has the potential to cause a problem. However, from the picture, it doesn't looks like very much was torn off from the rug placer. These small pieces Loki ate may very well pass on their own without causing an issue, however, I would be on the look out for signs of a possible problem brewing such as frequent vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite and lethargy. Oh no, that's not good! More than likely, this one thread will pass without problem especially if it isn't very long. The worst case scenario would be it could cause a linear foreign body, signs of which include a decreased appetite, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Keep an eye on her to be safe, and if you do see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away. Hopefully, however, she will be just fine. Best of luck!
