My dog ate a chemical and vomited. What else to do? How worried?

I'm so sorry you had such a scary experience with Harper Grace. Inducing vomiting is the most important part of preventing a toxicity from most poisons because it does not give the body time to absorb the toxin. Generally, we try to get a dog to vomit within an hour, so it sounds like you were within that window and would have been able to prevent absorption of any toxins, so I would not anticipate any problems, but certainly contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns. Poor guy. It is good that he at least vomited up this foreign object and hopefully he didn't ingest additional things that can harm him. Monitor him for the next 24 hrs for any other signs/symptoms that would prompt a vet visit, such as lethargy, decreased appetite, more vomiting or loose stool. I am not sure what the black substance is without seeing it, but as long as he is acting well and continues to do well for the next 24 hrs, he should be fine. If you do notice other symptoms or signs of trouble though, he should be seen by your vet right away for some testing and treatment. Best of luck with Boris and I hope that his illness symptoms stop here with the 1 vomiting episode. 1. Give ONE dose of famotidine (Pepcid) by mouth. They usually come in 10mg tablets. Give 1/2 tablet. 2. Wait 30 minutes and then feed one piece of bread. 3. No more food for at least 6 hours. Have water available at all times. If no more vomiting after 6 hours then go back to feeding as normal. The diarrhea should resolve on it's own in a day or so. If not, you can start him on a probiotic. One made for dogs; no human products. You can buy them at any large pet store like Petco. If the vomiting persists at any time he should see a vet ASAP.

While there is not an antidote, there are medications that can help with the symptoms that are simply not over the counter. For that reason, it is recommended that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to examine him, gather more information and decide how to treat him next. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!

Marley will likely be fine now. I suggest you take her to your veterinarian for a coagulation panel in about 7 days, just in case some of the anticoagulant in the poison (if this was the anticoagulant type) dis get absorbed. Watch for signs of illness (neurological such as seizures, or increased thirst...there are a few other types of rat poison which can cause this) and if these occur, please take your dog to the vet. Apart from that, if all the poison was regurgitated within a relatively short time after ingestion, your dog should be fine.

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

I would monitor him for any signs of depression, lethargy, seizures inappetance and contact your vet if you see any of these changes. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
