My dog ate grease, had diarrhea, now not pooping. Vet or wait?

She will likely have [vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1) and/or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1) later. If symptoms are mild, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-treat-your-dogs-upset-stomach) by withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the vomiting or diarrhea persist for more than 24 hours, see your veterinarian. She may also be at risk of [pancreatitis](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/canine-pancreatitis) which can be quite serious. Symptoms may include lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These symptoms should be addressed by your veterinarian immediately.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Athena Rose is having this issue. Unfortunately, you can not do much for her at home. It sounds highly likely that she could have pancreatitis - happens very often after they have ingested something fatty like grease. Pancreatitis can be life threatening and the longer you wait to seek treatment for her the more damage will be done to the pancreas. For now just monitor her, withhold food for 12 hours, the vomiting should stop first and the diarrhea will take a little longer. if she keeps on vomiting - take her to your vet to get an injection to stop the vomiting.

If she is otherwise acting ok then you could withhold food for the rest of the day and offer her a small amount of a bland diet tonight. You could buy a gastrointestinal diet or try a small amount of boiled chicken. If the diarrhea persists, she starts vomiting, or becomes lethargic then she needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. Hope she feels better soon.

As long as she is bright, has normal energy level, has good appetite and is passing normal stools, she should be fine. However, if you notice any of the worrying symptoms, you should get her checked by your local vets in the morning.

If Copper has been burned by the grill and is wounded, it would be best to bring him to a vet ASAP to have the wound cleaned, treated as needed, and any pain medications or antibiotics started. If Copper ate the grease, it is possible it could cause some GI upset such as vomiting or diarrhea for a few days. If he cannot keep anything down, has bloody stool or vomit, or becomes very painful or has a tender abdomen, this can be caused by an issue such as pancreatitis from eating too fatty of foods (such as grease) and should be treated by a vet in person ASAP.
