My dog ate grease, is vomiting, shivering, and won't eat. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 2 months old | 25 lbs

I have a Chihuahua Jack Russell 13 years old. She got ahold of a grease from brisket in the backyard on Monday. She threw up Monday night. She seemed fine Tuesday & Wednesday. But today found throw up all over the house & 3 pee spots. Mild shivers, will not eat currently, but will drink water & wants to throw that up. But hasn't thrown up all the water just a little bit. Slightly breathing heavier than usual. What can I do to help her. Appreciate your time in this.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Athena Rose is having this issue.

Unfortunately, you can not do much for her at home. It sounds highly likely that she could have pancreatitis - happens very often after they have ingested something fatty like grease. Pancreatitis can be life threatening and the longer you wait to seek treatment for her the more damage will be done to the pancreas. I suggest you get her to a vet ASAP for an exam and some blood testing.

I hope this helps. Best wishes.
