My dog ate grease, is throwing up bile, and won't eat. What's wrong?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Athena Rose is having this issue. Unfortunately, you can not do much for her at home. It sounds highly likely that she could have pancreatitis - happens very often after they have ingested something fatty like grease. Pancreatitis can be life threatening and the longer you wait to seek treatment for her the more damage will be done to the pancreas. If symptoms are mild, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-treat-your-dogs-upset-stomach) by withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the vomiting or diarrhea persist for more than 24 hours, see your veterinarian. She may also be at risk of [pancreatitis](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/canine-pancreatitis) which can be quite serious. Symptoms may include lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These symptoms should be addressed by your veterinarian immediately.

If she isn't vomiting and she just had diarrhea yesterday Iw ould say it is ok to wait until morning. If she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic or has bloody diarrhea overnight then I would recommend taking Goldie to an emergency veterinarian. Vomiting can be observed with gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity, foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

I am sorry to hear about Bruno! With his symptoms going on for several days and his age, I would recommend bringing him into the vet for an examination as soon as possible. There are MANY possible causes for vomiting in dogs https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/ ranging from ingesting some food that starts a bout of pancreatitis (which can result in decreased appetite and vomiting) to infections to tumors to other internal diseases such as liver or kidney issues. The vet will perform a physical examination and will likely recommend diagnostic testing such as x-rays and bloodwork to try to determine what is causing Bruno's illness and how best to treat it. Treatment will depend on the cause but often includes injectable medication to help with vomiting/nausea and fluids with an IV to help with dehydration.

Poor Buddy! It is difficult to know the cause without examining him and knowing the medications he is taking. If he is taking an antibiotic then he could have an upset stomach from the antibiotic. You should call your vet and give him/her an update as your vet may need to change medications. You could also add a probioitc to his diet and see if that helps. It would also be a good idea to have a stool sample tested for parasites to make sure he doesn't have an intestinal parasite causing the problem. Hope he feels better soon!
