My dog ate rocks and is throwing up green liquid. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lou. You will need to monitor him closely. Hopefully he vomited all of the rocks he ingested. If not, there is the potential for one to become lodged in his intestines. This would make him very ill. Signs of this include vomiting, lethargy and a decreased appetite. If this occurs, you will need to find a veterinarian for him. In the meantime, offer him some water . Wait several hours as he just vomited and then you can offer a small amount of his food. As long as your dog is not lethargic, retching and /or having diarrhea you can probably wait a few days in case you cannot take your dog to a vet tomorrow. However if any of those signs show then this is an emergency and your dog needs to be seen by a vet right away as there may be an intestinal obstruction caused by more stones. She will likely have more stones in her stomach, as dogs make it a habit to eat stones. These probably can be removed by making her regurgitate them with a medicine called apomorphine, or removed endoscopically , if they are still in the stomach, or via surgery.

Unfortunately, rocks of certain sized can get stuck in the GI tract and cause an obstruction so just watch him closely. An obstruction will usually cause vomiting and a lack of appetite. I actually had to surgically remove a rock from my own personal dog. Silly dogs will eat anything. Since he has a tendency to eat rocks, I would consider putting him in a crate when you aren't able to supervise him outside for his safety. I understand this may not be possible, just understand that he could obstruct if he eats a rock that is too large. In the meantime, I would feed him a high fiber canned food for a couple of days to help him pass this rock. I hope this helps!

If the vomiting, lack of normal thirst/appetite continue, then I would advise having your vet evaluate him. Rock ingestion can be a major problem in dogs. They can become stuck in the stomach or intestines causing a foreign body obstruction. Your vet can take a history, examine him, and then discuss a treatment plan as warranted. Good luck

Rockie is adorable and I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling well. After eating a heavy, greasy meal, he may have developed gastroenteritis (inflammation in his stomach and intestines) or pancreatitis. Aside from assuring that he is drinking water and offering a bit of a bland diet (boiled white meat chicken and rice) as you have done, there isn't anything more that can be done at home. Young puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration than adult dogs and need to be treated a bit more urgently. At this point, Rockie needs to take a trip to the vet for an exam, diagnostic testing and supportive care (IV fluids and medications). I hope that he is feeling better soon!

Poor Rocko! From your description, I would be very concerned that he may still have part of the sock, or some other foreign object, stuck in his stomach or intestines. This problem generally causes repeated episodes of vomiting, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Unfortunately, if he does have an intestinal blockage, this is a life-threatening problem that needs emergency surgery - there is nothing you can do at home to treat it. So I would focus on finding a way to get him in to see a vet as soon as possible. I would recommend that Rocko be evaluated by a veterinarian. If he is so constipated that he is now vomiting, then he will likely need veterinary care to remove the firm feces from his colon safely. However, there could be other causes for the vomiting and constipation-like symptoms, such as dietary indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. Several of these can be very serious. If he has a GI blockage caused by eating something that go stuck, then he may need surgery to get well again.
