My dog ate garlic powder and is vomiting. What home remedies work?

my dog ate some chicken that had garlic powder in it and he is has been vomiting for the past two days, has a lack of appetite, and has been laying around sleeping not in the mood to play. He is only drinking water because he refuses to eat could you please let me know what home remedies I could do?

There is no home remedy for garlic toxicity (if that is what he has). Garlic toxicity results in oxidative damage to the red blood cells (making the red blood cells more likely to rupture) - you cannot fix this at home. He needs to see a vet for this issue. This can be very serious.

Hopefully there wasn't garlic in there, as garlic is toxic to dogs. If she is otherwise fine, keep an eye on Audrey for now. If she vomits again, stops eating, stops drinking, starts vomiting water, her gums are pale, or she become very lethargic, have her seen by a vet right away. Best of luck.

I don’t think so - garlic and onions can cause anemia by damaging the red blood cells and symptoms are usually lethargy and a decreased appetite. It would also take much more than a few sprinkles of powder to cause a problem. If the vomiting continues I’d recommend seeing your vet.

I'm glad to hear that Minnie's vomiting has improved since you stopped giving her the garlic supplement. At high enough doses, garlic can cause varying degrees of damage to the red blood cells and occasionally can affect the kidneys. Odds are good that Minnie is not experiencing any of these problems since her vomiting has improved since stopping the supplement. However, the only way to know how well her red blood cells and kidneys are actually working is to take her to the vet to have some blood work (a CBC and chemistry panel) checked. The important part is that you recognized the potential for problems and stopped the supplement - I highly doubt it caused any lasting damage!

Unfortunately, there aren't any "natural" safe and effective flexible preventive options. I'd recommend talking to your vet about starting Minnie on a prescription chewable product, like Nexgard, Simparica, Credelio or Bravecto. Since fleas and ticks can transmit a number of different diseases, it is important to keep her on an effective product consistently. I hope that everything goes well for Minnie!

I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My small dog ate onion and garlic powder. What should I do now?

Onion toxicosis is consistently noted in animals that ingest more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions at one time. Garlic is 5 times more powerful than the onion. Considering the fact that the quantity is unknown I think the best course of action would be to take Taquito to your veterinarian to make him sick and give medication to reduce absorption of the toxics. My dog ate chicken with garlic & onion powder. Should I call the vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is unlikely to be an issue in terms of the garlic and onion powder as it was just a bit. This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. Is garlic powder in dog treats safe? My vet says garlic is toxic.

Garlic and onions both have the potential to be toxic, but amount and size of your animal contribute greatly to the toxicity level. The ASPCA poison control is a great resource for toxic chemicals, plants and foods if you would like more information. My suspicion is the dog treats have a very small amount of garlic and it is probably for flavor. I still find it interesting that it would contain it at all and if you were nervous about it I simply would not administer any more of the treats. Some of my favorite treats that I recommend for pet owners are things like dehydrated chicken or turke. Just simple strips of meat that don't contain any preservatives or any additional ingredients. I also like carrots and green beans depending on what your dog is willing to eat. Like with most pet food I try to encourage people to find things with simple, clean ingredients. Just like with our groceries, there are a lot of choices out there and not all are as healthy as the manufacturer would like us to believe.

My dog ate garlic butter 12 hrs ago, now puking/coughing. Emergency?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!
