My chihuahua ate French toast with nutmeg. Is a small amount safe?

It's not likely that Oliver got a big enough dose to cause any signs of toxicity. Nutmeg toxicity is quite rare and is actually a rather mild toxicant. It has been reported to cause drooling, vomiting and behavior change (causes hallucinations in people) in dogs receiving two tablespoons or more. If Oliver has excessive vomiting and/or a drastic change in behavior, then it would be best to take him to the vet for treatment and monitoring. Otherwise, he should be fine to observe at home for the next 24 hours. If he is fine after 24 hours, then you'll know that he did not receive a toxic dose and should not have any problems related to the nutmeg. I hope that helps and all is well with Oliver.

Nutmeg is basically poison for your dog and I would strongly recommend to have Rae checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible. If vomiting is induced at the vet practice is by far more effective and eventually other signs of toxicity (like neurological signs) can be treated as well.

A 16lb dog would need to eat 5 or more ounces of milk chocolate to be at risk of serious toxicity. At worst, you may see some vomiting or diarrhea. These can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Monitor for lethargy, persistent stomach upset, loss of appetite, restlessness, increased heart rate or tremors. While you are correct that nutmeg is toxic to cats, a few grains of it will likely do her no harm. It would take a significant amount for it to cause toxic symptoms (tremors, seizures, other nervous system abnormalities), and given that the eggnog was diluted with milk in the cup plus it was diluted in the carton with milk, I would suspect she ingested a very small amount with two or three licks. In addition, there is typically about one teaspoon of nutmeg in a recipe that makes six to seven cups of eggnog, a very small amount. I suspect she will be fine :-)

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your dog! A small amount of walnut is not anything we would worry about in terms of toxicity. If your dog has a very sensitive stomach, then he may have some mild gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea, but most dogs this will not cause any issues. Best of luck!

Aside from some possible stomach upset from getting an unfamiliar food, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Whatever amount of spices that may be present are such a tiny amount that I don't there would be any effect from them especially how little of it they actually ate. Of course keep any eye on them and keep any unauthorized food out of their reach and if they do get sick, get them seen by a vet.
