My dog ate French fries. Will he be okay? What are the symptoms?

While McDonald fries are certainly delicious, they are not meant for dogs. The problem with them is that they are both high in fat and salt, and fatty foods cause pancreatitis in dogs. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, and it's a very serious condition that requires intensive care because it can be fatal. If T'challa ate these fries within the last two hours, you can take him into a vet immediately to have vomiting induced to prevent any problems. If it's been longer than two hours, monitor him. Should you see a loss of appetite, vomiting, and/or belly pain, that could mean he has pancreatitis and you will need to take him into a vet immediately. I would withhold food for tonight and if he appears fine tomorrow and doesn't show any of the symptoms I mentioned above, feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal food. I hope this helps!

You may continue to monitor Coco for now to make sure that he does not develop any vomiting. If it resolves then he should be ok and there is no need for further evaluation of this. Maxi can get pancreatitis from this or diarrhea and vomiting. I would recommend giving her a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) just to calm everything down and then monitor her. If she starts vomiting, diarrhea, not eating, becomes lethargic then I recommend bringing her to a veterinarian. While onions can be bad for dogs that is not likely enough to cause any toxicity problems. However I would be worried about it being fried and causing an upset stomach and pancreatitis. This can be painful and start with a decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms, take him to the vet for testing and treatments.

At worst, you may see some stomach upset (vomiting, diarrhea). If so, withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to the regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your vet include persistent vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

A little frying oil may not have any effects on Diesel. If he ingested more than a little or if his tummy is sensitive, it may cause diarrhea or vomiting. You can counteract this potential side effect by feeding him a diet of boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for 24 hours. Monitor Diesel closely for any signs of severe GI upset as he should see the his veterinarian if this is seen. Lastly, it the oil was very hot or contained pieces of onion or garlic, I recommend for him to see his veterinarian to make sure there’s no injury and to discuss toxicity that can result from eating those vegetables.
