My dog ate esomeprazole. Is it an emergency or can I wait for the vet?

Hello. There is very little information on this product in veterinary medicine but based on information on similarly classed drugs, there should be little if any problems & is generally considered to be well tolerated. According to Plumb's Veterinary Formulary, Esomeprazole could potentially cause GI distress ( anorexia, colic, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & C. diff. infections ) as well as rare hematologic & neurologic disturbances & urinary tract infections . Information on acute toxicity is also limited in veterinary medicine, but the LD50, or amount of this drug needed to kill 50% of rats administered this medication is greater than 4000mg per kg. Nugget consumed the equivalent of 7 mg per kg. So, I would just keep a good watch on Nugget. If she shows any GI signs, they should resolve on their own. If nothing is seen in the next 24 hours, you can stop worrying, but this one pill does not warrant any medical attention at this time. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

If he just ate them, you can take him into a vet now to have vomiting induced to get them out. Otherwise, you can watch him. This likely will cause GI upset in the form of vomiting and diarrhea. If you see that, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

At worst, you may see some GI upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). If this happened recently, you can rinse her mouth with cool water for at least 15 minutes then dry her thoroughly. If she vomits once or twice yet is behaving normally, you can try withholding food for 24 hours then feeding a bland diet for a few days. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards. In the meantime, monitor for lethargy, persistent vomiting/diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that would need to be addressed by a veterinarian at the nearest veterinary ER.

This is a very high dose for a 20lb dog and some effects are likely to be seen. If it was eaten within the last 90 minutes, then it's best to take him to a vet so they can induce vomiting and give other treatment to prevent absorption of the drug. At this dose he is in danger of having tremors and possibly seizures, it's best to take him to the vet as soon as possible for treatment and monitoring. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A 250mg tablet is over 5mg/kg which is close to the gastro-intestinal signs and ulceration. It is probably too late to induce vomiting but that would have been ideal to do right after she ate. It is best to have her seen by your Vet to start gastro-intestinal protectants like omeprazole, sucralfate and misoprostal to protect her GI tract from ulceration just to be safe. While Dexilant isn't a drug regularly used in veterinary medicine, I found information that states "According to toxicity studies there was no effect from the drug on dogs when given at a dose of 5mg per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight for several days in a row." With his weight of 85 pounds, there will be no issues. Just do not give him anymore. I hope this helps!

I do not recommend inducing vomiting since giving hydrogen peroxide can cause esophageal irritation. Glycosamine is very safe so they should be fine. I would monitor them closely. They may vomit on their own, have diarrhea or be fine with no issues. Dogs are natural scavengers so they often are fine eating things they shouldn't and in large quantities. If they start acting lethargic or ill then I would certainly take them in for an exam and treatment. They may give fluids or activated charcoal to absorb the glycosamine.
