My dogs ate a lot of glucosamine. Is it an emergency? Home remedies?

Oh no, how naughty of Bentley! While not overly common, it has been shown that overdoses of joint supplements can lead to liver damage. Unfortunately, there is not much information known about the specific dose of glucosamine that can lead to this liver insult. For this reason, I do recommend taking Bentley to an emergency vet fairly urgently. They will be able to check his current blood chemistry to check his liver values and will likely recommend hospitalization for monitoring, IV fluids, and liver support medications. Fortunately, there is usually nothing overtly toxic with overdosing on a joint supplement, & if Louis is doing well at this time, he should continue to do so. He may experience some gastric upset, so diarrhea is still a possibility. I do want you to always be on the lookout for additional stomach problems such as vomiting, gagging/retching, bloating or perceived abdominal pain. Simba may develop some stomach upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). You may be able to manage it at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, persistent vomiting or diarrhea and abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

If Ace is unable to move because his back legs are paralyzed, you need to take him to an emergency clinic. This may not be related to the overdose of the glucosamine pills, and he needs a full neurologic exam and spinal/hip radiographs. If he is still nauseated from the overdose, he may need to be on anti-nausea meds and hospitalized with IV fluid support.

Hello. I am more concerned about the glucosamine content of these chews. Very large doses have been associated with acute liver injury, so if Layla ingested the chews in the past 2 hours, you should get her to an emergency vet for decontamination & possibly started on IV fluids to minimize possible damage. If the chews were ingested more than 2 hours ago, you should still see a veterinarian where activated charcoal may be administered to try & minimize absorption of the glucosamine & to have her liver values monitored over the next few days. This may not be enough to cause any problems, and I would just keep an eye on them. Rest them, avoid taking them for a walk, and don't give them any more food until the morning. If the only ingredient in the glucose tablets is glucose (sugar), he should be fine. Very large doses of sugar in dogs can cause excitement, high heart rate, jittery feelings, and even vomiting and diarrhea.
