Dog ate fish bones, now has diarrhea & vomiting. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My dog had stolen fish off of the table when no one was home and ate the whole thing and half of the bones on the fish. He then had consistent diarrhea and kept throwing up throughout the night. Is it food poisoning? And what can i do to help him feel better

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rex. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. Pancreatitis is common in his breed, especially after human food ingestion. Pancreatitis results in severe vomiting and diarrhea which will lead to dehydration. I also worry about the bones blocking or puncturing his intestines. The veterinarian will examine him and likely recommend blood work and x-rays of his belly. Based in these results, treatment can be started. I hope this information helps!
