My cat ate a dishcloth. Should I feed him or wait for him to vomit?

Poor guy. I can understand how worrisome this can be, especially when you are dealing with a foreign body ingestion, not knowing if it will pass or not. Hopefully the cloth was small and will pass through easily, which can take several days to a week in some cases. If he has vomited more than 3 times, then I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper exam and radiographs to check where the cloth is and see if it is already causing a blockage. Blockages will cause excessive vomiting (even water), lethargy and scant (few) feces. I do hope that he doesn't have a complete blockage, but he needs to be seen by your vet to determine if that is the case or not. At the very least the vet can prescribe antinausea medication to help control his vomiting and subsequently prevent him from becoming dehydrated as well. Best of luck to you and your pet Lucky. Poor girl. Unfortunately the only thing you can do now is to monitor her for any signs of a foreign body obstruction, which includes excessive vomiting, lethargy, lack of appetite, or small stool size. If you see these symptoms then a vet visit is recommended to have testing done and determine if she will need surgery to remove the cloth that she ingested. I hope that she will be ok. I'm glad to hear that she vomited the towel up! My concern is that there is other towel material or other foreign material that she ingested in the trash can. I'm glad that she seems to be eating normally now, but if she vomits or refuses her food at any point, take her to the vet. They will be able to perform an exam and abdominal x-rays to try to rule out the presence of more foreign material causing an obstruction in her stomach and/or intestines.

The vomiting could be from residual irritation from the ribbon or there could be more ribbon that is causing an obstruction. It is also possible it is completely unrelated to the ribbon in general: intestinal parasites, hair ball, ate something else gross (plant, etc), pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. You can continue to watch him but if he continues to vomit or stops eating that is an emergency and he needs to see a vet for an exam and an X-ray to check for a blockage. I wish you the best!

Dawn dish soap is usually non-toxic, and may just cause some stomach upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. You can try giving a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to help settle his upset stomach. However, if he continues vomiting, or his symptoms worsen (lethargy, refusal to eat, pale gums/tongue) then bringing him into your local vet or ER clinic may be best.

Oh no it's not good that Kitty ate that vomit! At most, I would expect that eating this vomit could cause some GI upset, causing her to vomit and/or have diarrhea. It's good that it doesn't look like she has eaten the plastic bag, and if she ate the bag, I would be concerned that the bag could cause a foreign body obstruction. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you see any vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I would have Charlie seen by a vet right away for this. A piece of shirt this long can easily cause a linear foreign body, and if it does create an obstruction, he would need surgery to remove it. It's best to avoid that completely, and the vet can determine if it's safe to give him a shot to induce vomiting to get it out of his stomach. Good luck!
