My dog ate a chocolate donut. Is cocoa toxic? Should I make him vomit?

You can try to calculate the exact amount of chocolate in the donut and call your local emergency clinic and they can tell you over the phone if the amount is toxic or not, but it is unlikely to be. Otherwise watch for vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, hyperactivity. If these occur get her to a vet right away. These are unlikely to occur however. Best of luck with Pixie!

That was naughty of Rudy to eat the cupcake! The good news is that with his weight and the amount of cocoa powder he ate, there will be minimal to no reaction from it. There is no need to induce vomiting. There is a potential for an upset stomach, diarrhea, and agitation, and if you see any GI signs, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Otherwise, Rudy should be fine :-)

Oh my, that was naughty of him to eat all that! Luckily the Oreos won't contain a lot of chocolate, and if the donut wasn't chocolate either, there wouldn't be a concern about chocolate toxicity. The concern is the sugar content, which can and does cause GI upset. I can give you a home remedy to try if you see any GI upset in the form of vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I certainly wouldn't worry about inducing vomiting after just one peanut butter cup. The induction of vomiting poses more risks than the peanut butter cup does! Inducing vomiting at home with hydrogen peroxide comes with the risk of aspiration and significant irritation to the esophagus and stomach. The wrapper will pass without a problem. There isn't enough chocolate in a peanut butter cup to cause any toxicity concerns. Worst case scenario, Jack may develop an upset stomach with a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. If he does, you can offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to his normal food. By looking at Jax weight and the amount of dark chocolate present in the cookies ingested he might just get a bit of tummy upset if anything at all. This means just some gastro-intestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea. If you think you can induce vomiting safely, I would do so for extra reassurance . If not I would just monitor him and take him to your vet if worried. Leave water down, if vomiting offer small amounts little and often.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but the cocoa content in a muffin will be relatively small. The big danger to dogs is eating really dark chocolate.
