My dog ate rat poison, vomited. Should I still be worried about her?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 7 years old | 75 lbs

I caught my dog eating a rat poison block, I called the vet immediately and they said to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. We got her to vomit 10 min after eating it and I could see most of the poison block in the 1st pile, a couple very tiny pieces in the 2nd pile with even less in the 3rd pile. She vomited a 4th time and I saw no pieces of the poison. She’s acting normal and seems fine but I am still worried

Marley will likely be fine now. I suggest you take her to your veterinarian for a coagulation panel in about 7 days, just in case some of the anticoagulant in the poison (if this was the anticoagulant type) dis get absorbed. Watch for signs of illness (neurological such as seizures, or increased thirst...there are a few other types of rat poison which can cause this) and if these occur, please take your dog to the vet.
Apart from that, if all the poison was regurgitated within a relatively short time after ingestion, your dog should be fine.

You did exactly the right thing by taking your puppy into the vet right away, and the fact that he vomited it all up is good. Hopefully, he should be ok, and I would trust the vet's medication instructions. Best of luck.

This is a true emergency. If he ate rat poison he needs to be taken to your vet or local veterinary emergency clinic right now. I would take the package with the ingredients of the rat poison so the vet will know the best way to treat him. Left untreated, he could pass away. I’m sorry he did this and I hope he starts to feel better soon!

I am sorry to hear about your worry with Charley! It sounds like luckily she is in the clear! If she wasn't showing any signs of toxicity and started vitamin K right away, then most cases would do just fine. Also, it sounds like she didn't ingest enough to cause toxic effects if the company is correct. If you want to feel even more certain (in terms of amount ingested) you can call Animal Poison Control if you know the exact brand/concentration of the bait she ingested, then they can calculate the toxic dose needed to cause symptoms. There is a fee for their service. The number is (888) 426-4435. IT sounds, however, like you have nothing to worry about!

Regardless of the dose ingested, it is recommended to at the very least start then on vitamin k which can help tremendously if in fact Roxy got anywhere near her toxic dose. This is an inexpensive and easy to implement therapy. She is not at a point that any effects are expected as it is too early in the course for that. I recommend that you have Roxy evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They could check her out and treat her accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog killed a rat but didn't eat it. She vomited. Is my child safe?

You probably do not need to be concerned since Puppy did not actually eat the rat. However, if you feel like she is acting abnormally, like vomiting or coughing excessively or acting more lethargic than normal, I would recommend taking her in to the vet just to make sure nothing is going on. There are some diseases that can be spread from rat to dog but with such limited interaction Puppy is probably fine. My only other concern would be if there was any rat poison around that the rat or Puppy could have gotten in to. If so, this could cause some bleeding issues in Puppy. Your vet can run a simple blood test to make sure this is not an issue.

Mila should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. This product is an anti-coagulant poison that inhibits normal blood clotting and leads to internal bleeding. Fortunately, there is an effective antidote (Vitamin K) but it's important to make sure you minimize the amount of poison Mila absorbs, and get her started on the antidote. Depending on the timing of the ingestion, your vet may make Mila vomit, and may give her something to minimize absorption, or they may recommend testing her current blood clotting ability. My dog ate a rat whole and seems okay. When should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Silly Camper! My primary concern is actually the status of the rat. If it was dead or lethargic, or if there has been rat bait placed anywhere Camper could have gone, you need to see your vet first thing in the morning for Rat Poison antidote. Taken as a preventative, it should prevent any problems from occurring. Rat Poison is often FATAL in dogs if not treated and early treatment is very successful. So if there is ANY possibility, please see your vet. Otherwise, continue to monitor Camper. As long as he remains playful and energetic, with normal stool and no vomiting, you do not have much cause for concern. If any of that changes, its time to see your vet. It can take between 1-7 days for signs of toxicity to occur, so you won't know if Bella is safe until about a week later. Keep an eye on her for signs of toxicity which include muscle tremors, hyper excitability, seizures, depression, hindlimb weakness, and ataxia.
