Dog ate toxic burning bush berries for years. Any hidden damage?

Please take your pet to the vet immediately. There is a high potential that these red berries (which can be a number of toxic berries to pets) were toxic to your pet and now the toxin is in his blood stream. He will need to be detoxed, which can only be done with fluid therapy and cathartics to help coat his intestinal lining to limit any further absorption of the toxin. He/she needs to be seen right away for her overall health and well being because this cannot be treated with any at home remedies or over the counter medications.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ilex can cause toxicity that is usually limited to GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc). If your dog is now happy and running and playing and eating normally, then I wouldn't do anything else. If he is still vomiting, not eating, or seems sore in his abdomen, then he likely needs medications to help with his toxicity, and if vomiting and diarrhea is severe he might need IV fluids. If he is still unwell 1 hour after ingesting the plants, and not wanting to eat, then I would bring him to a vet right away. Best of luck with your little one, I hope he is feeling better.

Symptoms tend to occur very quickly (within minutes to hours) of ingestion and can be very serious. If you observed him eating any of the plant I would contact your emergency clinic and advise them of the situation as he will need to be treated urgently if any signs develop - panting/rapid heart rate/tremors etc

The main things to watch out for would be GI in origin initially (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dark stools). Because this toxin can also cause liver failure also watch for a yellow color to the skin/eyes/urine and abdominal distention. If anything concerning is noted call your vet right away. Hopefully if the ingestion was small your guy will be fine but it is a scary plant. Did your vet provide you with liver support medication? And GI support medication? If the ingestion was so recent i usually recommend recheck bloodwork every 1 to 2 days initially as changes can be delayed. If the liver enzymes were already mildly elevated i would consider rechecking them before a week (1 to 2 days after initial documentation). That was naughty of Daedra to eat that tree lichen! This lichen is likely fungus, and while most types of fungi are mildly or non toxic, there are some kinds that can cause severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. You could take her into a vet now to have vomiting induced with a shot to get the lichen out of her stomach and take away any risk of toxicity. You can also choose to monitor her over the next 24-48 hours, and if you see any of the symptoms I mentioned above, take her into a vet immediately for treatment. I hope this helps!

So the Boxwood tree is actually very poisonous to dogs, and in small dogs, it does not take too much to cause severe toxic symptoms, even death. One sign of toxicity is vomiting. Now without seeing her in person, I can't say if she will be ok and because this can be very serious, she should see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies.
